Recalling Daria

A while ago, I finished re-watching the entire run of MTV’s Daria, after getting the new box set. I wasn’t too upset with the loss of the music samples that served as most of the series’ score: they highlighted some moments, but usually they seemed unessential. This is kind of an interesting perspective on Daria for me; as I've said, after taking a first strong interest in the show after coming through the "back door" of reading a MSTing of a Daria fanfic I could tell was hilariously twisted even with no real knowledge of the show, I sort of hung around the fringes of its fandom for a fair while. I did sort of get the impression that "everyone" had concluded Tom was controversial because he got in the way of the friendship between Daria and Jane, which seemed to be the defining feature of the show for them. (However, they also seemed to start finding fault with the show in the third season, where some of the episodes got a bit more fantastical...) In saying this, though, I also have the ambiguous awareness that I now feel no strong compulsion to get the DVDs and watch the series again.
