George had come with Nina for her first appointment on the island, so there was really no cause for him to be nervous now. Okay, granted, he'd been a bit preoccupied at the time with Nina's sudden arrival, but today wasn't his first go at this, so to speak.
But finding out exactly what they were having made this even more real than it already was, somehow. Or, at least, George suspected it would. Because after that came deciding on names and looking for baby clothes, and while George knew, of course, that all that was just on the horizon, he was sure this would send everything into fast-motion.
"So, you're absolutely sure you want to know, then?" he asked, realizing that in all the time he'd been on the island, the compound had never looked so ominous.
"Putting it off certainly isn't going to help," she answered easily, cutting him a weary look. George Sands could worry more than anyone else she'd ever met. Even under normal circumstances, he could take something small and work it up into a disaster. How he was even managing to stay sane through all of this, seemed a bloody miracle.
"George, we don't have to. If you'd rather I go on my own..."
"No, no, I'm- I'm here for this. I want to go," he replied, and for a moment, he nearly reached out to grab her hand. At the the last second, he tapped his fingers against his leg instead, unsure how the gesture would have gone over.
It never stopped being strange, how all of this kept marching on, no matter whether or not either of them were ready for it to. He wasn't even sure if it was alright to reach for Nina's hand and they were about to find out this extremely important thing.
It didn't occur to her, how affectionate they really were with one another, until it was gone. All those simple, casual touches, the reassurances, the kisses hello and goodbye, the hugs. They'd been comfortable with one another, physically, so early on. For someone as cautious as Nina, that part of the relationship had simply... clicked.
Now, they'd walked miles side by side and they hadn't so much as touched. They were both consciously avoiding it, even, which was immeasurably depressing.
"So, we'll go, and we'll find out, and then we'll move on from there." It was the only thing to do, at this point.
