Is it Parasite? I haven't re-read it in a really long time but it sounds like the fic you're looking for... well except for the ending, I don't think that's how this fic ends but I'm not sure. Also, this had a bit of a Mysterious Skin crossover from what I remember. If this isn't the one I hope someone else can help out.
