I think you've hit the heart of those readings. You brought them into the consciousness of others to think about without judging themselves wanting. That is the way people can hear and make changes.
Some use these particular readings to judge and create overwhelming guilt. "If you had enough faith you would be healed....
If you had been faithful enough these (bad) things wouldn't have happened.....
Your marriage wouldn't have failed.....
Your children wouldn't have needed to use drugs.....
The guilt that this interpretation creates is nearly insurmountable. It must be the truth because it was said by the elders, the pastor, (the people of faith)
The hurting individual can't break through the "if you had enough faith...." And find their way into the light.

You are exactly right. I had several specific examples come to mind but I ditched each of them in turn because they did nothing to illuminate the big picture. Thank you, I'm glad you 'get it'.
