One of those doors opens, and River emerges. She remains on tiptoe as she almost-twirls down the hallway. Upon catching sight of Gail, however, she presses herself against the wall, trying to blend in as best she can.
Gail had had more than enough excuses to develop fine-tuned senses, and in the quiet of the hall he picked out the slight noises of movement. He turned in their direction. “Is someone there?” he called in a half-hushed voice.
