I’m Roshni(that's Rosh-nee), people call me Ochie(That’s OH-CHEE, not OK-KEE). I’m and Indian(who was once an expatriate, but is now a true blue Singaporean) who is eighteen and I live in Singapore, a little island in South East Asia which keeps growing because of land reclamation. I'm a 12th grader, the equivalent here called Junior College 2/JC2. I’m sort of average heightish(people say I'm tall, but everyone seems to be generally 'tall' these days), maybe on the heavier side, but I’m pretty athletic and I love playing sports so I guess it’s sort of evened out. I’m not skinny, though, I’ve never been skinny and I’ll never be skinny. I have an elder sister (
sneakergaze ), who is off at college at Wesleyan in the US, so the room’s a little empty at times, but I get along with her really well and I generally get along pretty well with most people. I don’t have any pets, but I love animals a lot, and enjoy being around friends’ pets.
I adore theatre and Broadway, and it’s been a long time dream of mine to act professionally in a production.Right now I'm studying for my A Levels in 2010, subjects being Geography,English Literature, Maths and Theatre Studies and Drama. I also dance, I’ve been learning a form of Indian Classical Dance since I was four, which is how I’m guessing I got my love for being on stage in elaborate costumes. I love talking, and I guess I talk pretty well, because I’ve had the opportunity to emcee school events and that’s a lot of fun. I like being involved in things.
I love food, and though I’m a vegetarian by religion, I do like trying different things. I love mochas but not coffee, and I drink lots of hot chocolate and Milo on a regular basis.I've recently begun to go on a tea phase where I'm finding it extremely fun to try different types of teas. This kind of started out as a "green tea ia good for your skin" thing by my mum but green tea's good and I quite like it. I’ve survived for days on just bread in varying forms. I can’t cook very well myself, but I definitely can appreciate nicely cooked items. I love fresh fruit juices and loathe Coke/Coca Cola and carbonated drinks, since they’re really bad for your teeth with all the acid, and I’ve had my teeth nicely straightened with braces, so I’m not going to throw all that money and pain and effort away because I pick my teeth over my thirst. Loving food runs in my veins since I’m an Indian.
I’m a packrat, meaning I keep things from years ago. When I go to a place with cool tissue napkins, I steal a nice clean one and keep it. (I still have one from Hong Kong Disneyland! Come on, Disneyland is AWESOME.) I have huge boxes of things which I adore and can’t bring myself to throw away, I bring that up on my blog sometimes. Anyway, my packrat tendencies are usually a good thing because I’ll figure out some time later that something I kept came in very useful when I wanted to make or decorate something. Yeah, I like to decorate and make stuff. I can’t draw for NUTS, but I can design or decorate things decently I guess. I love fiddling around on Photoshop and Imageready (I make my own headers) I love shiny things like glitter and sequins.
I’m a geek. I spent the my four years of Secondary School (7th to 10th grade) as the Vice President of my school’s Robotics Club, and while I didn’t like it at first, I figured out how cool it actually is. So it is cool, it is terribly geeky, but I like it quite a lot. I like to fiddle with things, like I’m pretty good at troubleshooting things when my dad’s not around. It’s very handy. Like I said, I love Photoshop and Imageready and I’m trying pretty hard to get a good grasp on HTML coding so that I can do templates and stuff on my own. I can edit bits and pieces, but I’m working on it. I’m also a good geek because I make a ton of references to things people don’t get all the time. Oh, that and the fact that I have a strange interest in finding out how things work. I’ve borrowed books about how things are made and I have a lot of weird quirky facts in my head which confuses people pretty often. Do you know that one pair of jeans are made from twelve pieces of denim?
Anyway right now I'm part of my school's Guitar Ensemble and in the Indian Dance group and sort of part of the Indian Cultural Society(which does all sorts of random Indian things in the school). Yeah so I'm kept busy with things in school:) It's very different from robotics, and I'm happy that it is.
I like sports. I enjoy playing badminton and tennis (though I haven’t played in a while) and I play quite a few sports just because I’ve been introduced to them in school or whatever, like volleyball and stuff. We had an archery course in school this year and I found out that I’m not half bad at it. I like watching sports too, like cricket, tennis(federer asdfkl’;), and F1 racing(Alonso asfkj;l) so yeah I like sports too.
I’m pretty particular about music tastes. As in, if I find someone with similar music tastes, I take to them really well and if someone has completely different tastes, it takes a while more. But no matter. I love quite a wide range of music, ranging from various languages and genres. I love singer-songwriters like Jason Mraz, John Mayer, Tristan Prettyman, Ben Gibbard, Pete Murray, Drake Bell and bands like The Goo Goo Dolls, The Weepies, Nickel Creek, Franz Ferdinand, Jimmy Eat World, Death Cab For Cutie, Snow Patrol. I like to say I’m a Beatles fan, and don’t get me wrong, I am, it’s just sometimes I meet these HUGE fans who know everything vaguely Beatles related and that’s where I sometimes get stuck. I like them a lot, but hmm not obsessive over them. You can see my favourite albums
here. I kind of like a fair bit of jazz music too. Michael Buble is <3, and Nelly Furtado is also awesome. Recently I've become a fan of Bethany Joy Lenz's Come On Home and Regina Spektor is awesome. I like easygoing music, like Stacey Clark and Stephanie Heinzmann and people. yeah.More recent loves are Matt Nathanson,Matt Wertz and Jack Johnson:) I'm all for the singer-songwriters.
I also have my guilty pleasures when it comes to music, and they’re mostly bands from the 90’s, like S Club 7, N Sync, Mandy Moore, Blue, Backstreet Boys, and I’ll also admit it, while I never really liked Westlife, listening to their popular songs now makes me laugh and reminds me of my childhood, so they’re sort of guilty pleasure. Newer guilty pleasures are like Disney DCOM soundtracks (because they’re so cheery and they do cheer you up), Aly and AJ(who are pretty much Disney?)
Most importantly, I’m a soundtrack whore; meaning I adore soundtracks, whether they’re the music scores or music compilations for movies or tv shows, or whether they’re the original soundtracks from Broadway or movies or whatever. I’ve been listening to the Finding Neverland soundtrack a lot while studying, and I enjoy the soundtracks of Rent, Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along-Blog, Hairspray,Juno, Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter Lord of the Rings,Pushing Daisies and whoa this is never-ending. I’d love to discuss the awesomeness of soundtracks if you want to! NOW WE ADD GLEE HERE BECAUSE THE MUSIC IS AMAZING.
And I have to say this, I listen to a lot of Bollywood music, from films whether they’re old or not. It’s insanely fun and cheery. Melodrama it may be, but Bollywood/Hindi music has changed a LOT over the last ten years. You get Hindi Rock now. It’s awesome.
I like some French music, I love Goan music(because it makes me happy),and I guess it’s worth mentioning this. I’m learning to play the guitar!
Hmm, worth adding: I’m sort of a fan of Wizard Rock, I think Harry and the Potters are really amusing and The Remus Lupins are quite nice. I’ve lost touch, really.
I’m a geek-ergo, I love reading, which is why it deserves a section of its own. I read quite a fair bit, and I was an English Literature student in school, and I plan on am doing it for A Levels too. Anyway, I read a bit of young adult fiction, and some general fiction. The YA stuff I read is like the Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz, the Power of Five series by Anthony Horowitz, Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, and some other books like Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist and stuff by David Levithan.
I’m a huge Harry Potter fan, a decent Lord of the Rings fan, and I tend to be a purist, in that I feel compelled to always read the books before watching the movies, but I don’t seem to be doing that too often these days. I’m a huge Neil Gaiman fan, and I’ve read almost everything by him and I adore The Sandman graphic novels and American Gods and I own a fair few of his books.
I’ve read a fair bit of Meg Cabot when I was younger and while I used to enjoy it at the age of twelve, I uh, have to admit it’s a little annoying now. I do however, admit that I liked the Princess Diaries series a lot and am still in love with Michael Moscovitz and my favourite Meg Cabot book is All American Girl (and not the sequel because Ready or Not sucked majorly)
I like reading comics, I enjoy the usual newspaper comics like Foxtrot, Baby Blues, Bizarro, Get Fuzzy(<3<3), Stone Soup and stuff, but I’m also starting to like more popular comics like Transformers and stuff. I’m a Spiderman fangirl, but I can only say I’ve read one comic book. I do however, love V for Vendetta and The Watchmen, which I’ve read about twice, and like I said above, the Sandman Graphic novels. I’m not much for manga or anime, but I did borrow the whole Death Note series from my friend last year and got through that and I thought it was pretty cool just because of the whole concept and plotlines. I’m not a huge fan of manga-style art though some of it is very pretty and I honestly shouldn’t be saying anything because I can’t draw a straight line with a ruler that’s parallel to the edge of the paper.
Okay I think its worth mentioning that I've begun to read more plays recently, for Theatre Studies and Drama, and amongst the plays I've read, some that I really like a lot include A Midsummer Night's Dream by Shakespeare, Proof by David Auburn, The Roadrunners by this local playwright, some Haresh Sharma plays and some other obscure plays. Do give me book/play recs because I love to read what other people seem to like a lot to see whether I like it too or not.
I also love reading about things-movies, tv shows, famous people and stuff. I love behind-the-scenes stuff. It’s just so much fun.
I love watching movies because I am, even if I don’t admit it enough, an escapist and Iike to get away from things because my life tends to be monotonous and boring at times. School here’s really quite tough on kids and it gets to everyone, so my fellow Singaporeans probably know what I mean. I’ll pretty much watch any movie I can get my hands on, but to keep it a little simple, I’ll just list some of my favourite movies. To make it even easier for me, I’m just copying it from my facebook profile.
Finding Neverland, Billy Elliot, To Kill A Mockingbird, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Spiderman Trilogy, Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, V for Vendetta, Mirrormask, The History Boys, Harry Potter Series, Les Choristes, The Sound of Music, Garden State, Dead Poet's Society, Rock On!!, The Princess Diaries, Step Up, She's The Man, Across The Universe, Battle Royale, The Namesake, Stardust,Little Miss Sunshine
…and I guess you can count Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along-Blog as a movie? Hehe that’s priceless.
Okay I shall state this first. While I’m a fan of a fair few tv shows, I’m not really a RABID fangirl, in the sense that while I whine when I can’t see them, I can go pretty long without watching them. So what I’m into is…
Drake and Josh, Heroes, The Office(US), The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, Freaks and Geeks, Friends, Hannah Montana, Friends, Pushing Daisies, Monty Python's Flying Circus, 30 Rock, How I Met Your Mother, Take Home Chef, Globe Trekker, iCarly,Veronica Mars, Supernatural, Glee,Queer As Folk(I'll admit it haha)
I want to watch a lot more TV shows, but I’ve got some to watch(ergo Chuck S1/S2, Flight of the concords S1, The Office (Random episodes)...etc.) maybe I’ll try watching them as and when I can.
I fangirl a lot of ships and stuff, so it shouldn’t be hard to find something in common here!
Oh, and I’ve watched enough of One Tree Hill to have a decent discussion about it with anyone, but you may find me a litte cynical if you’re one of the hardcore fans.
Hmm, other oddities? I tend to be rather CAPS-LOCK-y when I’m high(which is pretty often) and I do get all moody and angsty at times too. I’m a normal hormonal teenager who fangirls excessively and rants unnecessarily. I digress unnaturally, and I guess I’m essentially a very random person.
I burst out unexpectedly into song and dance, but since this is my blog, you probably won’t see that. But I think my weird habits make me a fun person to be around with:P
If you’ve read this whole thing, well, congratulations! And thanks SO much for reading the whole thing! Comment and I’ll probably friend you if you want to friend me because I love getting to know people and ranting together about things we love!">
