As you know I am not one to support things that do not make sense within their own continuity but IIRC in the first instance OldSpock creates a singularity with the express purpose of it sending the ships back in time and the Romulan ship that had taken no damage, went through the door unharmed.
In the second instance YoungSpock flies a ship through their ship out into space, blasting as he goes, then sets it up to ram them, with the red matter forming dozens -nay severals- of droplets forming several small singularities within the ship, the ship is going to be ripped apart by a series of small singularities, but Kirk offers mercy, the Romulans refuse and Kirk fires upon them again to help aid the disintegration of their ship.

I've only seen it once so this may be incorrect.
