That speech in Cairo today brought me to tears. Finally, someone told the truth about everything. About my country, about the Palestinians, about the Arab world, about America. It was stunning. I'm ashamed to say I didn't listen to the speech. I am overjoyed is Mr. Obama came off as a voice of reason (he did, didn't he?)

He received standing ovations and shouts of "we love you" from Muslims in Cairo. I'd say he did pretty good. :)

I caught clips of the speech, and read it in its entirety online and I have to say, Mr O pulled it off rather remarkably. He does do that thing so damn well, doesn't he? It's like he's blowing a wind of hope through the whole process, and he is so charismatic (and thoughtful! compassionate! informed! culturally aware!!!! the difference with his predecessor never fails to amaze) you can't help but believe it WILL come to something...

Sigh. Fingers crossed the momentum picks up...

I was only able to read the text in its entirety; I just saw clips of Obama's delivery, but I was both proud and impressed. His strength, his honesty and yes, his empathy (take that, Sotomayor critics) give me hope for the ideals of my country, and I'm so relieved that his message was received positively in yours.

It's enlightening- and encouraging- to hear your reaction. I only hope some of your fellow citizens have the same sort of feelings. It's been far too long since there was a voice that could build some bridges. Jimmy Carter certainly tried. Sadat and Begin had their moments. King Hussein tried admirably, although he had the very unenviable geographic position on top of everything else.

I'm hoping I'll be able to hear all of the speech, since excerpts, or reading the text, make a different impression. The crowds must have been very caught up in the moment, which is so important in a region with a population with many young people. If listeners in Iran alone could be swayed...

What I heard definitely was as inclusive as possible and should have touched hearts and minds. I know we can't turn back time, but if only we could- by about a decade. I hope "W" had someone translate into "simple speak."
