"Of course I've improved," he tells Spock, and forces himself not to cross his arms or sulk or anything else that's going to look totally childish in front of his first officer. "I didn't even need another surgery. They need to let me out of here before I lose my goddamn mind."
Spock, perhaps, will understand the need to continue working to appease one's sanity, even if Jim's emotions are traditionally too bizarre to work out.

He begins setting up the board on a small side table that's suitable enough for the purpose.

... Well, it's true. Spock's been wonderfully personable, but Jim has to wonder why. He's still on enough medication to keep him a little chattier than normal. Steroids, nerve pain killers, and general pain meds (though he's eased off the latter, they make him too drowsy).
