[WAM] Make it count

[Set in Livin’ on a Prayer. Lisa is hisgumbygirl and used with permission from her mun who made a request for a Sam/Lisa kiss. This is actually backdated a bit. I think.]

It was-awkward.

A little awkward. Not completely awkward, because they could still live together and not have it be an issue, but it was there. It was like an elephant in the room that wasn’t that big, not yet, but might be a bit of a problem. Because he liked Lisa. He really liked Lisa. Even nearly thirty years down the line, and he could see what his brother had seen her. And therein laid the problem. His brother saw something in her. His brother had been with her.

His brother had a kid with her.

So-awkward. Liking the mother of your nephew in that way made things a really interesting brand of complicated, though Sam should have considered that that wasn’t really anything new. “Winchester” and “complicated” seemed to be synonyms a lot of the time, but here Sam really wasn’t trying to make it an issue. He didn’t want things to be any more awkward than they already were. She felt comfortable staying with him in the city, and he didn’t want to screw that up for her in a place where she knew no one.

He did his best to keep his distance, not to put them in a position that would make anything worse, but it got harder as the days went on. They just happened to be in each other’s space more, and it’d been a while since he’d had a person he was this interested in this close, all the time. It would have been easy, very easy, to just reach out and take what he wanted, but he knew that he needed to give it some time. Beyond the fact that this was his brother’s ex, she had just gotten out of a rather rough relationship, and he wasn’t about to push her into another one.

There were moments like this morning, though, that made things a little fuzzy. Moments where the opportunity was more than begging him to reach out and take it. They had fallen asleep watching a movie the night before, and woken up curled up on the couch together. Sam had his arm around her shoulders and the other around her waist, holding her close against him, warm and safe. He knew that he didn’t need much more than that, than just the feel of having someone close. He missed it. And he hated that he missed it, because it started to feel like if he stayed there, he’d be taking advantage of her, and that was the last thing in the world he wanted to do.

Getting out of it though was harder than it looked. She was mostly resting comfortably on top of him, and he really didn’t want to wake her. He started to shift slowly, continuing to hold her close as he started to ease her down onto the couch, when he felt her fingers tighten against his shirt.

“Don’t even think about it.”

Sam blinked as he looked down at her, surprised that she had stopped him. “Did I wake you?”

“No,” she replied, shifting so that her chin was resting on his chest lightly, giving him a small smile. “I was just comfortable.”

He smiled back at her slightly, moving one hand up to brush a hand through her hair lightly. “Well, I’m glad.”

She nodded slightly, before pushing herself up to inch a bit closer to him. “You know, Sam, I really appreciate everything you’ve done.”

“It’s the least I could do,” he replied softly, his hand staying close. She nodded slowly before responding again.

“It also wouldn’t be awkward if you kissed me.”

Sam’s eyes went a little wide as he started to push himself up a bit, shaking his head, flustered. “I wasn’t-I mean, I wasn’t thinking about-”

“Don’t even bother,” Lisa said softly, pushing herself up a little more so that she’s more eye level with him. “I know what you’re thinking. Just-do it.”

Sam was still hesitant. “Are you-”

“Sam, if you-”

He pushed himself up a little more, rising up to meet her and kissing her gently. He felt her sigh softly into the kiss and he pulled her in closer, letting his arms slide around her and keep her close. He wanted to hold on to her for as long as he could, but after a while he really did have to breathe, and he broke the kiss slowly, looking back at her and she was giving him a grin.

“See? Now was that so hard?”
