Twenty Songs - 2008 ii

Over on YouSendIt is the second half of that list of my twenty songs of 2008. For those of you who enjoyed, derided or simply ignored the last batch, get this lot before apathy gets you.

My often off-base reasonings are, predictably enough, below the cut.

At least we agree about Elbow and British Sea Power. I can't make my mind up about Vampire Weekend - they strike me as being a little bit lightweight.

I think that's exactly the right word for Vampire Weekend, yes. And what would your tunes of the year be, sirrah?

Well - Australasian 80s revivalists seem to be somewhat of a feature this year.

Under The Blacklight, 2007's decidedly rubbish LP

You're a wronghead.

Songs about the joys of statutory rape do not a great album make, grasshopper. :P

I am not claiming it's a great album. It's definitely the weakest of all of theirs. However, I would object to it being called rubbish.

I'm with Pitchfork: it goes down easy enough but ultimately lacks substance.

I cannot get Bon Iver no matter how hard I try. I saw him live supporting Jens Lekman and was massively bored.

I saw him play a tune on Jools Holland and was not particularly over-awed, yeah. It's the record that gets me. YMMV, obviously.

who cares if it's hummable when it's this clever

It is hummable... and (for just this once) she is wrong.

But what is it with this Elbow lovefest? Couple of OK tracks across on the first few albums but only memorable think about Kid is the trumpets in the first few seconds. Otherwise can't remember anything.

The Seldom Seen Kid is probably more consistent than any of Elbow's previous efforts, but does lack the killer 'Swicthing Off'. Otherwise, I agree entirely about Elbow - their records usually slip past me, with one or two bumps where the tunes are.

I just don't get Vampire Weekend. TV On The Radio on the other hand both rock and have soul...

TV On The Radio are a bit of a curate's egg for my money. And I'm with you on Vampire Weekend in terms of being dubious about their actual quality - like I say, this is a list which doesn't really care too much about that. (Although both VW and Elbow don't make it to the whittled ten over at the Other Blog.)
