Nick wasn’t sure what to expect when he told Lucifer that the devil could use him.
Light, pure light, hadn’t been even close to the top of the list. Nick reeled in the light. After a moment, he realized that he was still on his bed. He opened his eyes, or tried to. Nothing happened. Before he could panic, his eyes opened and he sat up. His body sat up, because he hadn’t done anything of the sort.
He started to panic in earnest. “Oh, don’t worry, Nick,” his body said. “I did say I needed to use your body.”
Nick felt the light press against him. Lucifer. It was Lucifer. Lucifer laughed. “Yes, indeed. You had no idea what I meant, did you?”
No, Nick hadn’t.
Lucifer stretched slowly. “Hmmm… yes, I was right,” he said. “You’re not the strongest, but you’re a good fit for now.”
Nick wasn’t sure he wanted to know what that meant. Lucifer moved over to the mirror that hung over the dresser. “Hello Nick,” Lucifer said, looking into the mirror. After a moment, Nick realized that he could answer.
“You’re possessing me, aren’t you?” Nick asked.
“Yes, I am,” Lucifer said. “For a human who really has no idea what’s out there, you’re very quick.”
“Um… thanks,” Nick replied. “So, uh, now what?”
Lucifer smiled. “First, I think I need to find my followers. Then, perhaps, I can see about a certain something you deserve. And then, well…”
“Don’t forget to put some clothes on,” Nick said. He was, after all, still dressed in his night clothes.
Lucifer tilted his head. “No one will take you seriously if you’re in pajama pants,” Nick said.
Lucifer chuckled and everything went dark. No, not dark, light, but Nick wasn’t aware of anything but the light surrounding him.

Nick didn’t know how long he’d spent in the light. It had hurt, it hurt a lot. But he’d agreed.
Then he was staring at his own reflection in the mirror. “Hello, Nick,” his mirror image said.
“Lucifer,” Nick said. He glanced at his body. He was dressed in jeans and one of Nick’s favorite shirts.
The angel in his form smiled. “I’m letting you see what’s happening, Nick, because I found someone you wanted to see,” he said. Nick looked out into the room they were in. A completely unfamiliar man stood there, not looking at either of them. “One of my demons found him. He’s the man who killed your wife and daughter.”
Nick surprised himself by trying to leap forward and throttle the man. Lucifer didn’t even sway. “I thought you might want him,” Lucifer said. The angel sighed. “I can’t let you take control, but I can give you his life, and I’ll do what you want me to do to him.”
“Why?” Nick asked.
“I promised you revenge, and I don’t break my promises to my vessels. I cannot find my Father, but this man I could find. He is yours, Nick, to do with as you please.” Lucifer looked away from the reflection. “Leave him,” he ordered.
The man threw his head back, and a long stream of black smoke spilled out of him. He collapsed to the ground. Lucifer waited patiently, and after a minute or two, the man stirred. He looked up at Lucifer in confusion. “Who…?”
Lucifer smiled down at him. “So, tell me,” he said. “Do you remember a home invasion three months ago?” he asked. “One where there was a mother and child at home?”
The man paled. “I don’t…”
“Don’t lie,” Lucifer said.
It didn’t matter to Nick, though. He could see things, probably because of Lucifer. The man was remembering the attack, how Sarah had been napping, and he’d stabbed her just because he could, and then found the little girl in her crib. He’d contemplated taking her and raising her as a perfect little toy before just killing her…
In his mind, Nick snarled. “Kill him. Slowly,” he told Lucifer.
Lucifer smiled. “With pleasure, Nick,” he said.
Nick watched every move his body made. It was brutal and drawn out, and by the time it was done, his hands were covered in blood. He didn’t flinch from it. That… murderer had destroyed his family. The police weren’t doing anything to find him, so why should Nick be upset that he was tortured to death.
Lucifer looked down at his hands when he was done. He brushed his hands against each other and suddenly the blood was gone. He turned and looked at the mirror again. “Thank you,” Nick said.
“I told you, Nick, I wanted to give you revenge.”
“How long are you going to need me?” Nick asked. He probably should have asked before he’d agreed, but it was too late now.
“I don’t know, Nick,” Lucifer said. “It depends on how stubborn Sam decides to be.”
“Sam?” Nick asked.
Lucifer sighed. “Nick, you are not a permanent solution. As an angel, I cannot take a form that won’t kill all my followers unless I have a vessel to possess. But as an archangel, only a few vessels can hold me for any length of time. You’re one of them, but you’re not the vessel that’s destined to be able to hold me for all eternity if necessary.”
“So I’m… backup?” Nick asked. “Why didn’t you just go to the guy who can hold you?”
Lucifer sighed and rolled his eyes. “Because, despite everything, Sam is stubborn and contrary, and too concerned with what his brother thinks.”
Nick frowned. “Who is this Sam?” Nick asked. “And have you even talked to him yet?”
“No,” Lucifer said. “I can’t seem to find him. He disappeared after he and his brother handled War.”
Nick didn’t even bother to guess what that meant. “How long as it been?” he asked. He didn’t specify how long since what, but luckily Lucifer knew what he was trying to say.
“Nearly two months,” Lucifer said.
Nick blinked, staring at his own face, Lucifer’s smirk firm on it. “Oh,” he said.
Then all was the painful light again.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Nick wondered what had dragged him away from the painful light, but he didn’t complain. This time, he couldn’t move as Lucifer confronted a young man. After a moment, he realized that this was Sam, Lucifer’s destined vessel. Nick tried to be indignant, but he could feel only relief at the thought of being away from that painful light. But then the younger man said no, and everything disappeared again.
Some time later, he found himself staring at another man trapped in a ring of fire. No. This wasn’t a man. This was another angel. Another fallen angel. As Nick listened to Lucifer and Castiel argue, he couldn’t help be confused. Heaven wanted Lucifer to destroy humanity? And this angel didn’t, enough so he’d allied with Lucifer’s true vessel? It didn’t make sense. He knew Lucifer felt his confusion, but the fallen archangel didn’t say anything. Then the world fell away.
Nick began to live for those moments when he was dragged away from the pain and the light, to see what was happening around him. It began to happen more and more. Lucifer was always doing something horrible. Nick almost didn’t care. At least he wasn’t the one hurting.
He saw flashes of that other vessel a couple of times, with another man who was probably Sam’s brother, Dean. A group of beings Lucifer called pagan upstarts. And then another archangel. Gabriel- and he’d tried to talk Lucifer out of his revenge, and then tried to kill Lucifer when that didn’t work. Nick didn’t know how to help Lucifer deal with his grief and guilt over killed his brother, and that grief was almost worse then the light.
In the end, Nick decided that the light was worse. Finally, one day he was dragged to consciousness to watch as Sam and Dean confronted Lucifer. Then Sam said yes. Nick rejoiced. He was finally going to be free of this possession. Light surrounded him and Sam. Lucifer let go of his body and arrowed straight to Sam. Nick felt himself fall, and knew he was dying. But that was alright. The pain was gone, the light was gone, and Lucifer had cared for him. It had been hard, but it hadn’t been all bad. He treasured the first time he’d come out of the light. Lucifer had done what he’d said he would, as much as he could, after all.
Nick met death with a smile. He knew, even if he never saw his wife again, he’d done this for her.
