Summary/Excerpt: Ever since that day, I have admired other men, fought many more, and even had a hand in training some of them. But you’re the only one who doesn’t belong above or below me, just beside me.
I talked you into a stone and skipped you across the water - oh, but it was me who was really sinking - Wide Mouth Mason
I reached out and I kissed you.
That’s it. No sweet story. No great obstacles. No confessions. I just reached out and I kissed you, and you let me. That was also the day I told you never to interfere in a fight of mine again, and you agreed. I thought I’d won that, but really, you probably just shrugged and decided to let me kill myself if I wanted to so badly. And I did.
Oh, not on the surface, and if anyone had said I did, I would have beat them senseless. Not that I wouldn’t do so otherwise, of course. But I had nothing to direct my anger at, no goal to set my sights on. I still can’t understand how you can accept waiting. Standing back. Holding back. Because I can’t. And I can’t figure how you can understand me so well.
Did you know I’d find my direction? If not, how could you stand watching me sink, knowing I might never find it?
Maybe you could see what we’d become, small snatches of what we could be hidden in our actions. You’ve always been able to see things in a way I can’t. Especially when it comes to me. Why you walked at my side, watched and waited for a fool like me - I can’t imagine.
Every time I turn around, you’re there. I don’t have to wonder if you’ll be nearby, if you’ll agree to what I want to do or what I’m going to say. I know. Ever since that day, I have admired other men, fought many more, and even had a hand in training some of them. But you’re the only one who doesn’t belong above or below me, just beside me.
The only one I see as my equal. And that’s makes me a fool still.
For you.
