Hisagi was all muscle, sharp angles, and black. Black clothes, black hair, black marks. Black eyes.
He was serious. Quiet. Friendly, as much as a man in his position could be.
Vice-captain. Respected. Holding the division together without a Captain, getting all the work done. And, when he could, training. Fighting until he was sweaty and breathless, damp black hair sticking to his neck, his forehead.
Tattoo on one side of his face, scars running down the other side. Wearing both like he was born with them. The scars came from a Hollow. The tattoo came from admiration.
Kensei could barely remember the day that had inspired such dedication, the day that had ended in pain and sorrow. It had ended his life. The lives of people dear to him.
And yet, Hisagi told him it was the beginning for him, the beginning of his own life.
He was glad he hadn’t been there to see Hisagi grow up. Glad he hadn’t been there when the young man made it into the academy, hadn’t been there when he earned a seat in the 13 divisions. He was glad he couldn’t remember the small boy he’d saved, the boy he’d hauled up to stand on his feet, who he’d spoken to.
Because he would still be thinking of Hisagi as a little boy, even now.
Instead, he met him on the battlefield, knew about him only what he’d seen and heard in the last few weeks.
He saw Hisagi as a man.
A man to be admired.
