Title: First Day
Pairing/Characters: Touya, Yukito, Doumeki, Watanuki, Fay, Kurogane (Characters by CLAMP)
Warnings:
Notes: Set in my High Scool AU. It's the start of Touya/Yukito. I have to admit, though, that I only know them from TRC and one random CCS manga I read a long time ago. So I apologize if they aren't themselves. Reading 'Red Strings' will probably make Watanuki's actions here understandable. ^_^
“It’s just another school. Filled with students just as niaauuggghh!” Yukito lay where he fell for a moment, eyes shut, hoping desperately that when he opened them, there would be no one in sight. Talking to himself and then tripping on air was not the sort of first impression he wanted to make on anyone. Much to his chagrin, when he opened his eyes, there was definitely someone there. Two someones. A good-looking boy around his age, and a sweet-looking younger girl. The boy had his hand out. Yukito felt his cheeks flame as he took it and got up. The girl looked at him anxiously. “Are you alright? You’re new, aren‘t you?”
“He’ll be fine, monster, but you’re gonna be late,” the boy said. The girl’s expression instantly changed to one of outrage. Yukito blinked in surprise as the boy dodged the girl’s book bag sailing at his head without even looking. He nodded at Yukito. “We’ll be late, too, I guess. Better get going.”
“Y-yeah.” Yukito watched the boy enter the school, followed by the girl stomping along behind him.
“You can sit right there, beside Fluorite.” The teacher smiled and gestured towards a blond boy, who smiled and waved. Alright, that’s not so bad, Yukito thought, sliding into the empty seat. The blond turned to him. “I’m Fluorite Fay. If you need anything, let me know.”
Yukito felt a smile cross his face for the first time that day. “Thank you.” Fluorite nodded happily and turned to face the front. Yukito was about to do the same when the boy on the other side of Fluorite caught his eye. He was not smiling. He was glaring. He glanced at Fluorite, then back at Yukito. His red eyes narrowed. Yukito lost his smile and slumped in his seat a little. Yukito decided never to bother Fluorite if he could help it.
“Ohhhh…” Yukito groaned. Lunch was sold out and his own had been squashed beneath him that morning. He was starving. If he hadn’t gotten lost on the way out here, he’d probably be happily wolfing something down. He didn’t care if it was cheap, or bland, he needed food. “Excuse me.” Yukito turned. Two boys were sitting nearby, with a lunch between the two of them. They were both looking at him.
“Are you talking to me?”
The blue-eyed boy smiled. “Yes. You missed lunch, didn’t you?” He gestured towards the food in front of him. “Come sit with us. I make plenty, and this idiot always eats too much, anyway.” The boy looked friendly and the food looked very friendly, arranged prettily in bento boxes. Yukito sat.
“Thank you! I’ve had a rough day so far.” He accepted the box the boy pushed into his hands and risked his second smile for the day.
“You’re new, huh? Tsukishiro Yukito, right? I’m Watanuki Kimihiro. This is Doumeki Shizuka.” The other boy, Doumeki, looked up from his lunch.
“Hi.”
“I’m pleased to meet both of you. And thank you very much for the food… my lunch had a little mishap this morning.”
“Don’t mention it. It’s too bad your day isn’t going well…I remember my first day of school. Elementary school.” He frowned slightly. “The very first person I met was him.” He looked at Doumeki. “I’m still stuck with him. I hope you met someone worthwhile first thing. They say that makes all the difference.”
“The first person to introduce himself was Fluorite-kun. But the boy beside him didn’t seem to like that…”
“Oh, yeah, Sohi-kun is a little scary…”
“The first to introduce himself. Not the first one you met.” Doumeki was looking at Yukito questioningly. Yukito thought back to this morning, flushed a little.
“There was someone…that is, two people, a boy and a girl…I met them. He had dark hair, and the girl was younger. He called her monster, and she had green eyes and brown hair…”
“You must have met Kinomoto Touya and his sister, Sakura.” Watanuki pressed his chopsticks to his lip, thinking. “I don’t really know much about Kinomoto-kun.” Watanuki looked around, searching the crowd. “There.”
The dark-haired boy had just walked out the doors, and was called over to a group already sitting and eating. He sat with them and pulled a box out of his bag. Watanuki then did something strange. He studied Kinomoto for a long moment, then slowly his eyes traveled from somewhere around the boy’s lunch to Yukito’s. When Watanuki finally looked up and saw Yukito looking at him, he started. “Er…sorry…I was just…thinking.” Watanuki looked down and tore into his lunch. Doumeki gave him a look that plainly said he thought the boy was an adorable idiot. He shook his head apologetically at Yukito. Yukito decided to follow Doumeki’s lead: ignore Watanuki and eat.
His afternoon was deceptively peaceful, at least until it was time to go home. The teacher told him he needed to go to the office to clear up ‘a little something’.
It turned out that his school records somehow hadn’t made it from his previous school to this one. The secretary took all his information, confirmed everything they did have on file for him. She asked him to take a seat while she called his old school to clear things up. As she waited for them to pick up, she smiled at him. “Poor you. Losing all your files. It’s almost as though you didn’t exist before this day, isn’t it?” Yukito smiled weakly in return, was glad when she started talking to whoever was on the other end of the line.
It was late when he finally got out, the situation cleared up and his status as a student and human being confirmed. Of course, he personally thought the best evidence he had for existing was his rumbling stomach. He was starving. He started home, reached into his pocket for his keys.
Not there.
He stopped dead, pockets empty and his family not due home for at least another two hours. With a sigh, he started walking again, nowhere to go but his empty home. He could read on the porch until someone came home. And hope to not faint before-hand. He didn’t get too far when he heard a scatter of pebbles behind him. He turned to find Kinomoto Touya sitting on a bike, looking at him. Smiling. “I was wondering how you got on today.”
Yukito couldn’t help but smile back. “I’m afraid what you saw this morning became the trend of the day. Nothing went right.”
“Hey. The first thing I did this morning was to help you up.”
Yukito felt a funny warmth bloom inside him. “I didn’t think of it that way. But then, a lot of things happened to me after that.”
“Are you headed home?”
“Yes. I’m locked out, though. I forgot my keys.”
“You’re welcome to come over to my house until your family gets home. I think I can promise it’ll be better than waiting for them outside.” He held out his hand again.
Yukito took it.
