So a crowd has gathered round us, I’m pining one last kiss
Struggling with this lifeline, in the shadow of this bliss
Patience, my love
It'll all be alright
He couldn’t believe it, could barely trust his senses. He expected to wake up at any moment. But it was too horrible to be anything but reality. And he was too broken to deny Watanuki’s arms, his mouth. He struggled to stay conscious as he looked at the pale face above his.
Ain't it funny how the fates work, I feel cheated by the turn
But this love it hovers over us, and the lessons that we've learned
Patience, my love
He can’t afford to be angry, angry at how he can’t stay now that Watanuki has realized their truth. He can only be happy that he’s being held close, that Watanuki is holding onto him in an effort to keep him here, to make up for lost time.
We were lost inside a wasteland
of fools groping for the gold
I wonder if they'll think of us
while they're searching for their souls
Patience, my love
They had been tangled up in reality, in some concept of it, had been fighting for so long. Any difference they had made, anyone who knew…he didn’t even know if it was worth the pain of this moment. He thought it wasn’t.
With your arms around me, you're singing softly
And I
fade from memory
and move on
May nothing harm you
I'm still inside you
with my wings around you
Doumeki smiled, and he felt joy rise in him when Watanuki returned it. The days may have been sweeter if they’d had this all along, but it didn’t change how he felt. He couldn’t have loved him more or any differently. All he regretted was that he would die happy, and leave Watanuki in pain. He raised a hand slowly and the other boy took it, held tightly.
“Don’t leave me. You can’t.”
So never put it out, my love
The spirit is the flame that burns within
Hold on to it
and it'll all work out fine
Rain had begun to fall, and it must have been cold, but in Watanuki’s warmth, Doumeki didn’t feel it. “I’m not leaving you alone. I’m leaving you with the ones you love. And they love you.”
Sleep now is descending like a dream
Still I'm shaking from the softness
of your skin
Hold on to me love
and make it all feel alright
As Watanuki pressed a warm kiss to his forehead, Doumeki’s eyes closed. They were heavy, and he was tired. He was so tired, and Watanuki’s arms told him he could sleep. That he was safe.
With your arms around me, you're singing softly
And I
fade from memory
and move on
May nothing harm you
I'm still inside you
with my wings around you
Sweet lover, go on
Oh, love, be strong
His last thoughts were of Watanuki, his safety, his happiness. All he could leave behind was his memory, and he hoped it would be enough to keep him loved and safe. To carry him until they found each other again.
“I’m leaving my life with you.” His words were a whisper, but he knew Watanuki heard them clearly just the same, over the rain that poured around them. He wanted to see those eyes again, the one gold, the one blue, but he found his own wouldn’t open again.
