Just Friends (2/?)

Author's Note: So this is my second foray into the world of writing. Sorry if it jumps around a bit. I didn’t get much sleep last night. I had too many ideas running through my head in regards to this story.

Mark reached over to grab a chart behind the nurse’s desk as he came to stand next to Callie. “Torres” he beamed greeting her with his trademark smile. “Oh, hey Mark” she replied as she was drawn away from the chart she had been studying unsuccessfully for the last half hour. “So, anymore hot, dirty, bathroom make out sessions I need to know about?” he said with a smirk. Callie looked at him puzzled. “No, why?” She turned and started wandering down the hall with him in tow. “Wow, that’s surprising. What with the way neither of you could tear your eyes away from each other.” “You were at the bar last night?” She asked genuinely surprised. “As I said” a massive grin plastering his face “you weren’t exactly aware of anything last night except her.” Callie stopped in her tracks looking quite embarrassed “I was that bad”. Mark placed his arm in hers as they resumed their walk “Trust me you weren’t the only one, she was just as oblivious to the rest of the world. That’s why I was sure something would happen last night.” “Well nothing did” Callie replied nonchalantly. “Well, sort of nothing. I think she was going to kiss me last night but we were interrupted. She sort of ran off after that.”

“So, I’m guessing the whole friend thing isn’t working for you” he asked. “Not particularly” she replied sadly. “Well do something about it, use your super Torres powers of seduction or something.” Callie let out a burst of laughter “My what?” barely able to contain herself. “Oh c’mon, you know that you could make any man, and I'm guessing any woman want you with just a bash of your eyelashes and a pout of your lips.” He said seriously. “I can?” she asked with a smile. “Trust me on this one Torres” he replied as he wrapped his arm around her shoulder “No one can resist you for long.”

“But I don’t even know how to start. I’ve never seduced a woman before.” Mark had a contemplative look on his face. “Well you could always invite her over for a sleepover, that always works in all the movies I have seen.” Callie started laughing again “Mark that’s called porn, and its not exactly realistic” Mark stepped in to defend his idea “Hey some of them are actually pretty good.” “Mark, I’m not inviting her over for a sleepover” Callie replied firmly. She stopped an idea suddenly dawning “I know what I can do though” a smile spreading across her face. “I will see you later Mark” she called out as she turned on her heels and ran in the opposite direction.

Callie paused outside the attending’s locker room. Slowing her heart rate and her breathing as she slowly opened the door. Callie caught sight of the blonde doctor she was looking for chatting to an older male doctor in the corner of the room. As soon as Arizona saw the dark haired beauty enter the room a smile spread across her face. “I will see you later Tom, there is someone I need to talk to” moving away from the doctor she was talking to. Arizona glided over to Callie, a genuine look of happiness radiating from her. “Hey Cal, what are you doing here?” Callie’s breath caught in her lungs as the object of her desire approached her. “Well” she started, trying to compose her thoughts “I was wondering if you wanted to come over for dinner tonight and maybe even a movie.” The smile on Arizona’s face disappeared “Cal, about last night. I still just want….” Callie interrupted before Arizona could recite her just friends speech again “what? Friends can’t have dinner”. A look of guilt crossed Arizona’s face “Oh, I thought that you were asking me…” “On a date” Callie finished her sentence for her with a raised eyebrow. Callie took a deep breath “Look, I like spending time with you, your perky and uplifting. Last night was fun and considering my life lately I could use a little fun.” The smile returned to Arizona’s face. “Well in that case, count me in.” “Do you want to come over at about 8?” Callie said with relief in her voice. “8 sounds good” Arizona replied. “Ok, so I guess I will see you then, I’m in apartment 14” as she turned towards the exit “see you then” Arizona called out as Callie disappeared through the door.

Callie raced around the apartment like a mad woman. Trying to make everything perfect. She had spent an hour trying to figure out what to wear, deciding on her favourite pair of jeans and a black sweater. Knowing this outfit showed off all her assets whilst appearing casual. She looked hot and she knew it. She glanced up at the clock, it read 8:05. Callie started putting the finishing touches on dinner when she heard a knock at the door. She ran to the mirror. Making sure nothing was out of place. She then slowly and casually approached the door, not wanting this to appear as anything other than two friends having dinner.

Callie had to force herself to breath when she caught sight of the blue eyes standing outside her apartment as she opened the door.  Arizona looked stunning. She was wearing the same blue dress she had been when Callie had approached her at Joes that night but this time her hair was in the curls that she had come to adore. As Callie's eyes roamed the blonde’s body in front of her she noticed that Arizona seemed to be in the same sense of awe that she was.

Clearing her mind of the thoughts that were suddenly prominent in her mind she gestured for Arizona to come in. As Arizona entered the apartment she seemed obviously impressed “Wow, this place is beautiful”. “Thanks, Christina and I like it.” Arizona’s eyes wandered over the apartment, taking everything in, “whose Christina?” Callie was busy serving out dinner glancing up at the blonde again when she asked the question “Oh, Dr. Yang. She’s my roommate.” Arizona was surprised by the amount of relief she felt when Callie answered her.

“Would you like a glass of red, with dinner? I hope your hungry. I didn’t know what you like so I decided on Chicken piccata. Considering I built it up so much the other night. I really hope it meets you expectations,” Callie was babbling. She felt her nerves taking control as Arizona approached the kitchen. Arizona smiled realising the effect she was having on the woman before her. “Callie trust me, you are consistently exceeding any expectations I had of you and yes I would love a glass of wine and I am absolutely starving”. Callie blushed at the blondes compliment.

“I don’t cook for people often. The last person I cooked for…” Callie was trying to explain the reason behind her nerves even if she knew it was the blonde causing her to act insane rather than the cooking. “Well, it smells wonderful” the blonde said comfortingly.

The conversation between the two women as they ate flowed flawlessly. There was a certain comfort between the two of them. As Arizona ate her last mouthful she reached out to pour each of them another glass of wine. “That was amazing Callie, you are definitely quite the cook” obviously delighted with how the night was going. “Well I told you I had experience” Callie said smugly. Arizona blushed at the obvious stab at her previous remarks. “In fact speaking of experience, I have a question for you” Callie asked inquisitively. “Shoot.” Arizona replied. “Well when did you know?” Callie asked as she leaned back in her chair taking another sip of her wine. “Know what?” Arizona asked smugly, already knowing what the answer would be. Callie brushed a hair away from her face and continued “Well when did you know that you liked women?” “Oh, that” Arizona leaned back in her chair. “Well I knew when I was 14”. “Wow, that early. How did that happen?” Callie asked clearly surprised. “Well actually I got invited to a sleepover by a friend of mine”. Callie's wine caught in her throat and she started coughing as she tried to hide her laughter. “Is something wrong?” Arizona asked clearly concerned for her choking friend. “No, no, nothings wrong. You just, what you just said reminded me of something Mark said today.” Callie replied as she cleared her throat. “Care to share” Arizona asked in obvious amusement of Callie's reaction. “Maybe later, please continue with your story”.

Arizona leaned back again “Well as I said I was at a sleepover at a friends house, so we were lying in bed just chatting and gossiping and I don’t know something just clicked. Out of nowhere. It was like suddenly everything fell into place and made sense. I realised that I liked the girl lying next to me. Really liked her. Anyway out of nowhere I confessed to her that I suspected I might like women. She didn’t have a problem with it. In fact she thought it was great. So we continued to talk about it. Like what it would be like being with a female and all that sort of stuff. As the night went on one thing sort of ended up leading to another and well, you know how it goes”. Callie sat there spell bound by Arizona’s frankness about her first time. “So did you two end up..” she asked curiously. “God no, next day I ended up telling my then best friend about what had happened. She then proceeded to tell every living person at the school about it. Of course the girl involved called me a liar and said nothing had ever happened” Arizona still seemed her perky self whilst reliving her past memories. “So basically I got branded a liar and between that and the very prominent homophobia at my school I spent the rest of my high school years as a bit of a loner. It was good though. I put all my focus into my study. Its how I got into med school.”

“Anyway, enough about me” Arizona said with a laugh. “I do believe we were going to watch a movie tonight.” Callie nodded “We most certainly are, how about you go and pick one out from the DVD cabinet next to the TV whilst I clean up”. “I can do that” Arizona smiled. Taking her wine with her as she wandered towards the DVDs. Callie proceeded to pack everything up after dinner. As she was placing the used cutlery in the dishwasher she heard a loud roar of laughter coming from the living room. Callie walked in to see what all the fuss was about. Arizona was crouched over looking at her DVD collection barely containing the laughter that was seeping out of her. “What’s so funny?” Callie asked curiously. Arizona turned around holding a group of about 10 DVDs, grinning ridiculously    “Did they have a sale on lesbian movies at your local video store or something?” Callie looked down at the collection that Arizona was holding “oh, those” Arizona looked at her with her eyebrow raised begging her with her eyes to explain. “Promise you wont laugh” Callie asked embarrassed. “No more than I already have” Arizona replied. “Well you know the other day when you called me a infant?” Callie said shyly. “Newborn” Arizona corrected her. “Yeah, right, newborn. Well after you said that I sort of realised you were kind of right. So I basically decided to immerse myself in lesbian pop culture. You know so I can gain a bit of lesbian street cred before I start going out to the gay bars and all that. Its silly I know.” “Lesbian street cred?” Arizona asked with a raised eyebrow. “Oh shut up” Callie said playfully “I’m tyring to educate myself here”.

“So what movie are you up to?” Arizona asked with a glint in her eye. “You want to watch one with me?” Callie asked grinning. “Well I wouldn’t want to set back your education. Besides I have already seen all of these. So I know what’s good.” Arizona replied whilst examining the DVDs in front of her. Callie went over to the DVDs in Arizona’s hand “I think I was going to watch ‘Bound’ next”. Arizona’s breath caught in the back of her throat. “Oh” she replied. “What, is it not good?” Callie asked as she looked at the cover. “No, its good, its really good. Its just there are a few scenes…” Arizona looked over at Callie nervously “maybe we should watch something else”. “No way, you cant build it up like that and say I cant watch it” Callie said with a pout. Arizona clung to the DVD “I really think that we shouldn’t”. Callie skipped forward towards Arizona and snatched the DVD out of her hands. Opening the cover and placing the DVD in the DVD player. “This is my house and I say were watching it” Arizona took a place on the lounge knowing she had been defeated.

“I have a tattoo. Would you like to see it?” the huskily sweet voice came from the television.

Callie’s mouth was agape. They were barely 10 minutes in and she couldn’t take her eyes off the movie. Arizona looked over at the dark haired doctor beside her stifling a chuckle as she watched the obvious effect this movie was having on her. Her eyes started to wander over the body next to her. Taking in every facet of her. She could smell Callie’s perfume being this close to her. It was intoxicating.

Callie noticed the looks that Arizona was giving her from the corner of her eye and she smiled inwardly. She took her hand and ran it along Arizona’s arm before coming to interlace her fingers with the blonde doctors, all the while pretending to be immersed in the movie. “Callie” The blonde said firmly, gesturing to their hands. Callie looked over at her innocently “Friends hold hands don’t they” her smile beaming across her face. Arizona looked into the chocolate orbs in front of her. Her resolve failing. Deciding she would allow herself this small amount of contact.

They stayed like that through the whole movie. Callie’s thumb running gentle circles on the blonde’s hand. Arizona had stopped paying attention to the movie a long time ago. Allowing herself to relish in the contact and warmth that was radiating from the person sitting next to her. As the credits began to roll Arizona turned towards Callie. “So do you think your ready for a gay bar now?” A smile playing across her face. Callie laughed, “I think I’m ready”. Arizona joined her laughter. “Well I tell you what, one of my friends owns a club downtown. It’s been a long time since I’ve been there and I could do with a night out dancing. Would you like to join me on Saturday night? You know as friends.” Callie smiled excitedly “I would love to”.

Arizona stood up disentangling her fingers from Callies. Instantly missing the contact. “I better head home” she said as started towards to door. “Work tomorrow and all that”. Callie jumped up and ran towards the door getting there before the blonde. “Thanks for coming tonight Arizona”. Opening the door so that the blonde had to slide past her. “Thank you for inviting me Callie.” She replied as her body brushed up against the other woman’s. The close proximity instantly sending chills through each woman’s body. With that the blonde headed towards the elevator leaving the dark haired doctor once again contemplating her thoughts.
