Prologue | Chapter 1

.o0o.
There was a complete silent. Then the two intruders tiptoed slowly approaching the main room. I stood still, watching them, wishing they wouldn’t see me peeking from behind the couch. They turned around and entered kitchen. The two of them started their whispering war again. I slowly and silently moved behind the counter, carefully not to make any sounds, peeking again from my new position. They were still at it, whisper war I mean, but now randomly opening cupboards and cabinets.

“No, leave it,” whispered the smaller one.

“But we need this,” the bigger one didn’t listen and slipped the thing he was holding under his shirt.

“It’s better if we take this one,” the smaller one pointed out something in front the two of them, then slowly a grin formed at other face. He slipped out earlier thing and replaced it with the new one.

“Hyung, we better take some noodles too,” the bigger one said while watching his hyung searched something in other cupboard.

“Look what I’ve found!” The hyung handed over some other thing.

The other took it immediately, whispering out loud. “Hyung, I’m so love you,” he said as he sliped the thing under his shirt again.

“You are welcome,” I said as sarcastic as possible in a whisper, “help your self!”

The two intruders froze. They slowly turned around just to find me watching them from the counter.

“Hyukkie!” they broke into laughter. There’s no shame, I could tell you from their laugh, even when they got busted trying to steal some sausages. “You’re home already?”

“Ssh~!” they might wake the kid up, “What are you doing here? Why do I have the felling that this is not the first time?”

“Don’t be like that to your hyungs, aish, Hyukkie, will you?” said the bigger one.

“Even when you try to rob me, hyung? And can you keep your voice down please!”

The other broke into another laughter, and I had to ‘ssh’ him again.

“And you hyung! Don’t I expect too much from you to keep Kangin hyung in the manner? You even do this your self!”

“Don’t blame Teukie, you monkey!”

“Who should I blame then?” I clenched teeth together. “And please keep your voice down!”

“Hard day, Hyuk?” Teukie hyung reached over the counter to ruffle my hair, still didn’t bother to keep his voice down low. Meanwhile, he tried giving code to his lover to run away with the loot. Kangin got the code, silently backing off.

“No,” I said randomly watching Kangin leaving then facing my other hyung.

“Tell your hyung if you had a hard day, Hyuk!” Teukie hyung said it with concern in his voice but not in his face.

“Are you mocking me?” Teukie hyung knew me to well. I wasn’t surprised if he even asking common thing like this to me. He would know immediately if there’s something wrong with me. He was my childhood friends, currently working as a nurse at local hospital, and he and his boyfriend Kangin were my neighbor next door. “Every day is a hard day!” I said under my breath.

“What?”

“Nothing! Please just leave, hyung!”

Suddenly there’s movement from the couch. We both startled then staring at it for a second.

“Just leave,” I repeated.

Teukie hyung still staring at the couch, then shifted his attention to me, “Are sure you alright, Hyuk?”

I sighed, “Not really, but I don’t want to talk about it now,”

“Then, later?”

“Yeah, later! So leave now, hyung!”

Teukie stayed still for a moment. I could see a smile on his lips. “Alright,” he said, as if demanded me to keep my word, “You have been away lately, Hyuk. I do want to talk to you, so keep your word.”

I sighed again. Even my best friend didn’t trust my word. But I didn’t blame him. He knew such a liar I am. In fact, I did plan not to keep what I just said before if he didn’t demand it clearly.

“Alright.” I sighed from defeated.

He ran his hand to my hair and ruffled it before left me alone in the counter. I could hear a soft thud when he closed the front door.

.o0o.
Same morning, I thought when the smell of fried bacon sneaking under my blanket. My head hurt from hangover and my stomach grumbled.

I got up and got out to the main room. Same scenes, I thought when I saw his back while he was cooking.

“Good morning!” he said, turning his head for greeting me. “I can’t find the sausages, so I hope you don’t mind with the bacons,” he turned around again to give me a smile.

I mumbled something that sounded like ‘don’t worry’ to him then take a cup of coffee. I thought I know where the sausages had gone.

I watched him. He was already wearing his uniform.

“Hey!” I called him. He startled then turning his head toward me. No wonder, because I never started a conversation with him. But I chose to ignore his reaction. “Don’t the cupboards and cabinets have key on them?”

“Yeah,” he said, still couldn’t figure where this conversation’s going.

“Then lock it next time, there’re thieves around lately,”

“Thieves? But why cupboard? Were the thieves robbing food stock?”

“Where do you think your sausages gone?”

He chuckled, shoved the bacons out of pan to a plate then said, “Surely not because someone stole it,”

“Yeah, right!” I said, realize that this will end pathetically. “Just make sure you lock them all.”

“Okay,” he said obediently. He put the bacons in the dining table and folded up his apron. I took a seat in front of the bacons, but he didn’t follow me like usual. He packed his lunch and hung his backpack on his shoulders.

“I’m going now,” he said.

I was eyeing him, but didn’t ask a single question. He had been going early and earlier each day passed.

“Just put the plate in the sink, I will clean it up later,” he said, ignoring my stares, then left.

After I had had my breakfast, I cleaned myself into a quick shower and got dressed. I’ve got scheduled to go out with Hannie to Mr. Boss to take some job he had offered earlier. Easy one so I could manage to finish it quickly then went to buy a bed for the kid. Right before I went out from my apartment, my phone rang. I eyed the screen and saw unfamiliar number.

“Hello?”

“Good morning! Am I talking with Lee Hyukjae-sshi?” said a man from the other line. I frowned. He knew my name.

“Yes, you’re talking with him. May I help you?”

“I’m Kim Donghae’s headmaster, Kim Jongwoon. We’ve met once when you accompanied him registered,” he said, formally. I didn’t remember him, but hell, he was the kid headmaster and I didn’t expect to be called by him at all.

Kim Donghae? I thought for a moment. Uh, crap!

“Ah~” I said, didn’t know what else to say, “There’s… there’s something wrong, Jongwoon-sshi?”

“I have been expecting you to be in my office since last week, Hyukjae-sshi. I wonder if you didn’t get the invitation.”

“Invitation? To your office?” I said, confused.

Apparently, my confusion was clear enough because then Jongwoon-sshi said, “Ah~ I see. So you indeed didn’t receive my letter,”

“Yeah,” I said, starting to feel apologetic, “I have no idea, I’m really sorry, Sir! Is there a problem, Sir? With the ki…Donghae?”

“Unfortunately, I should say, yes, there are, Sir. That’s why I really want to meet you to discuss this. How about we arrange a meeting?”

“That…would be great…,” I didn’t find this great at all, but what else to say? In the form, I am the kid guardian.

So there, we had arranged a meeting at his office in other day. Not that I really wanted to come. And the issue was not only why Jongwoon-sshi called me, but also why the kid didn’t tell me about the letter.  But I couldn’t care more. I didn’t want to care at all. So I tossed the thought aside and starting my day.

We really got an easy job. We’re just delivering some loot and illegal things. When we had our lunch together, Hannie offered himself to accompany me to buy the bed. I always agreed, because it had been a long time ago when I still tried to refuse and I learned the hard way to know how persistent this hyung could be, even when he asked out of the blue, with no specific reason.

I didn’t expect that the shopping will take so little time, and we got home before the sun could even say goodbye. The bed came earlier than me and Hannie. I unlocked the door and let the bed entered first then go in myself. Strange, I thought.

“Please put it in the room to the right,” I ordered the deliveryman, and then checked the living room. There’s no one. Hannie came in and a soft thud could be heard when he closed the door.

“What happened, Hyuk?” said Hannie, curious to see me lost in my own apartment.

“Don’t a highschooler suppose to be at home at this time?”

“Um~” Hannie mumbled something incoherent.

“The kid hasn’t home yet,” I took a look at the sink where I still could see my breakfast dishes earlier.

“What time he usually come home?”

“How should I know? I usually home past midnight, mind you?”

When I looked at Hannie, soft smile curled upon his lips.

“What?” Uh, I regretted to come out with this stupid conversation.

“You have been attached to Donghae lately, Hyuk,” he said still giving me his soft smile.

“No,” I denied him, “I just used to him,”

“Yeah, you’re right,” he said casually, but somehow I felt really offended.

“I mean it!”

“Yeah, I know,” he said again, still using the same tone.

“No! You’re mocking me right? With the lame stupid joke and all,” I still remembered his embarrassing statement and couldn’t help but felt angry again.

“Woa~woa~, easy Hyuk!” Hannie said with clear amusement in his tone, “Ah~ thank you, sir!” he thanked the deliveryman who already fulfilled their duty and escorted them to the door. “You’re getting so emo lately, and I don’t know why you still deny to yourself that you like him!”

“You want to stay for dinner?” I treated him.

“Alright, alright! I will shut up! Geez, Hyuk! Are you in your period or something?”

Was I getting too paranoid? I couldn’t help but throwing my glare at the front door all the time. Hannie didn’t say anything though. I just had to keep telling my self that I was eager to see the kid just to tell him that he had dragged me to his school problem and I demanded a solution from him. It was almost 11 when the kid finally came home.

I turned my head sharply, and tried to peek from the couch where I currently watching some old lame movie when I heard the door being unlocked. A moment later the kid entered the living room and I noticed his surprise expression when he saw me and Hannie were staring at him.

“You… you’re home…” he trailed off.

But Hannie butt in, “No kid! When you’re just home, you suppose to say ‘I’m home’, you know?”

The kid scratched his forehead, refused to look at me.

“Do you usually home at this time kid?” I asked casually, didn’t want to sound too worried.

“No, not really, it just, um~ you know, that lately, I have a lot, um~ activities…club! Club activities!” he said, more like convincing himself.

Hannie chuckled at this, “You know, you’re suck at lying; I mean, Hyuk, how come you believe everything that he said?”

No. Truthfully, I didn’t trust the kid at all, but if I said it to Hannie now, he would definitely start asking why ‘this’? Why ‘that’? Why and why, and I was afraid that I didn’t even know the answer either.

“You should go now,” I said to Hannie instead.

“But, we haven’t drunk anything yet, and for fuck sake it is only 11 and Friday!”

“So what?” I didn’t understand what he was trying to say.

“Not, like you, I don’t have anyone to spend the night with,” he pouted, not cute at all.

The hell! He would start that damn topic again! “Not my business,” I said, pushing him toward the door.

Hannie chuckled again. Really, he wasn’t drunk yet, but his behavior already liked such a desperate old single salesman. Well, single part quite true. “The more you deny it, the more I will come up with the topic hyuk, seriously, you really need to go to psychiatrist or something, because your bad habit is getting worse since that kid has invaded your life.”

I didn’t ask what habit, because maybe I knew. Hannie put his shoes on then said again, “not that he invades you is a bad thing, you know, I personally thing it’s a good thing if you can let go your past and accept present,” he briefly stopped before adding, “And if you stop lying to yourself.”

I didn’t say anything. I escorted him outside and said a very quite goodbye when someone passed by. With a light step and white pure short dress, ‘she-neighbor-next-door’ passed by us without even spared a glare. She never failed mesmerized me, but I quickly got control of myself then looked at Hannie who was still following the figure with his wide eyes. I stared at him in disbelief when he lowered his body to have a better ‘scene’. I kicked him. Hannie turned at me sharply, I could see he still held his breath and I couldn’t help but laughing at him, “Breath Hannie! For the fuck sake!”

But he ignored me and said, “Who is that angel that just passed by us hyuk? I so~ want~ to~ fuck can you stop laughing? Can’t you see I’m just falling in love?”

“Then go after your angel!”

“Ah, you’re right!” Hannie ran to chase up with ‘his love’ without saying anything again. I wished him good luck and got in.

Donghae had changed his uniform and put his bag with his other belonging in the corner of the main room near the imitation plant and currently washing the dishes.

“Hey kid!” I called, but he ignored me. “Are you always home this late?”

“No,” here came a short answer.

“Yeah? I doubt it.” I jumped in the couch and watched the abandon movie earlier.

“Then why should you ask in the first place? We already used to this all lies so why you even care now?”

“Don’t talk back to me kid!” I glared at his back, “You are not in the place to talk.”

“I don’t mind as long as I don’t have to give you some lame excuses,” he muttered.

“You don’t have to talk,” I said, trying to control myself, “but have to answer my questions!”

“I AM answering your questions,”

“Yeah, like, with lies? How can you think that I will tolerate your lies forever, eh? How you think you can live here with telling me lies over and over?”

He finished washing the dishes, turned off the faucet and dried his hands before turned around to face me, “Don’t you think that you are the one who has been lying the most to yourself? Don’t make me as your excuses.”

I got up from the couch, “Don’t tell me what to do and not to do! I’m the one who’s lecturing you here!”

“See? People usually like avoiding thing if they know they are in the wrong position,” Donghae said, with much wit.

Did I? Did I really do that?

I stayed silent. Maybe it’s true. I didn’t like people telling me to not lie to myself, because I couldn’t live without it. I needed to lie to myself to get through with my life. The more I lie, the more I addicted to it.

“Get in to your room!” I said after much difficult.

He made a mocking sound, “Do I even have one?”

“Yes you are!” I pointed at the room, “now move your belongings!”

Donghae raised his eyebrows with surprise, when he got an unexpected answer, slowly he felt apologetic for being such a brat. He moved his belongings under Hyuk intense glare and before he shutted the door close, Hyuk added, “And you are grounded until Monday!!” but to this, Donghae curled his lips to a smile.
