Random Fedora 9 Geekery

Jul 03, 2008 16:48

This post is for anyone who, like me, has googled for phrases such as "consolekit.getseats request failed" or "daemon exit: live and let die" in an attempt to find out what's wrong with their system and not ended up finding anything useful (except, hopefully, for this post).

The rest of you can skip this. :-) )

"static" might mean something other than static linking (e.g. routing); or it might mean static WRT shared libraries specific to it but still dynamically linked against more common ones.

On F7 it is indeed a statically linked executable. On F9 it is a symlink to the ordinary dynamically linked executable. It seems that someone decided to do away with the static binaries (it would have made sense to stop referring to them by the .static name then, surely?) but forgot that it refers to a library in /usr but gets executed before /usr is mounted.
