Robert was glad to be home as he slotted his key in the lock and opened the door.

"Sweetest, I'm home. And what smells so good?" Robert considered whatever she cooked to be gourmet. It wasn't something frozen or boxed.

Ruby came out of the kitchen and smiled at him, trying not to show the bad news on her face.

"It's beef stroganoff. I found a recipe and I thought it might be something you'd like."

She went up to him and kissed him softly, then wrapped her arms around his waist.

"There's a present for you in the living room."

He held her for a while, looking into her eyes. He stroked her face.

"Sweetest," he said softly, stroking her hair.

"Show me?"

She nodded with a soft smile, taking his hand to lead him to the crate in the living room. The puppy, wearing a large blue bow, was poking its head out the top curiously, and its tail started wagging with excitement when it saw him.
