He loved all of his customers to a degree, or he couldn't do his job, but Ruby, the one he chose for himself, was special, and being with her fed his spirit in a way that no other could.
He knocked quietly, not wanting to disturb the neighbors.

She held him for a good long while before finally letting go and hurrying into the kitchen to get the fries (which were getting quite brown and crispy) from the oven. Then she grabbed the ketchup out of the fridge, dumped the fries onto a plate and returned to the couch, patting the place beside her.
"You look tired."
