My new plan on dealing with Extended Warrenty offers.

When I'm asked if I want an extended warranty, I will take that as a retailer's concern for the quality of the product. I will then respond with "Are you that concerned with the quality of the product that you believe it requires additional protection? Perhaps I should reconsider my purchase. Thank you for warning me. That's funny, but it sounds like too much work to me. Almost everything I want I can buy online for cheaper, so when i actually go into a store to buy something it means I want it now.

However, I do agree. I hate the "extended warranties." It's not because they think the product will break, it's because they are playing on your fear that the product will break. The sales person gets a bump in their paycheck and the store gets a boost in profits. When I worked at K-mart, I got $0.25 for every warranty I sold, $0.50 for any warranties over $15.

There is an exception, for cell phones. But only because I have a 2-year-old and another coming. They put them in their mouths, give them baths, etc. It is hard finding cell phones rated for 50 m under water...
