Shuuhei paid the man at the jewelers and placed the small black box in his pocket. Once he was out on the street he let out a soft sigh. He was happy with his purchase, but it wasn’t what he really wanted. He wanted something better, something more beautiful, something…out of his price range. Originally he thought that all his additional work, all those long hours of overtime, would lead to additional money in his bank account. He was right, but only to some extent. He did in fact get a bonus; it just wasn’t as much as he was hoping for. Shuuhei kicked at a smallish rock laying helplessly by his feet in an attempt to relieve his frustration. Tonight was their 2 year anniversary and he’d been planning this for a while now. He wasn’t going to let his lack of funding completely ruin it. He just hoped that it would be enough for Yumichika.
The rest of the evening went according to plan. The dinner he had prepared was well received. Yumichika even complained that he didn’t get to sample Shuuhei’s home cooking frequently enough. Now that dinner was over, the couple spread a large blanket on the hillside and laid down to watch the sun setting over Seireitei. After a few minutes, Shuuhei began fumbling nervously with the small box in his pocket. He was beginning to doubt whether he could actually follow through on the rest of the plan. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to do it…but he wanted to do this properly. Yumichika desired and expected perfection in everything…how could he go through with it if everything wasn’t perfect?
“Shuu, what’s wrong?”
He must have been frowning while contemplating again. Taking a deep breath, Shuuhei decided to take the plunge. He pulled the box out of his pocket and sat up in order to face Yumichika properly.
“Nothing’s wrong, Yumi. I just wanted tonight to be perfect. I want you to know how much you mean to me. And I want…I…I want you to be with me forever.” Blushing slightly he opened the box and held it out in front of Yumichika. “I just wish I could have gotten you a better ring…”
“Baka,” said Yumichika as he took the ring from the box and placed it on the ring finger of his left hand. “I want this to be something that lasts. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. The ring is thoughtful and appreciated but completely unnecessary.”
Shuuhei smiled as Yumichika then proceeded to pin him back down on the blanket as the last rays of the sun sank into the western sky.
