That's beautiful. You lulled me with the gentle memories of a child's summer vacation, which made the juxtaposition of your description of "real life" afterward even harsher and more jarring. Well done!

I'm glad you returned to Colorado :)

The idea that the mother is escaping and the child sees it as an adventure is such a compelling juxtaposition!

It wasn't until much later that I realized that there was something to escape from, or rather that the violence was escapable. When things got bad I'd just hide usually instead.
