The first time Kyuhyun sees him, he knows that things will never be the same again. Pink puffs and doe eyes and a wide smile flurries past his vision, gone in a blink of an eye, but fail to ever leave his thoughts for the rest of the day.
“Lee Sungmin,” the boy tells him the next morning, and Kyuhyun thinks that he will never forget such a beautiful name.
--
Kyuhyun takes his usual place at the register, and sighs inwardly. He glances at the clock a little too frequently, and doesn’t pay enough attention to anything else to notice the bouncy boy across the counter from him.
“Yah!” The boy rests his elbows on the glass surface and peers up at Kyuhyun. “Are you going to take my order, or what?” A knowing grin forms on the boy’s face and Kyuhyun snaps out of his reverie. “Do you miss me that much?”
Kyuhyun’s eyes widen and he starts to sputter, the pink-clad male catching him off guard. “S-sorry, I was j-just… uhm…” He lets out a deep breath and pushes the hair up from his forehead and holds it there. “It’s been a long day.” He grabs a notepad from beside him and looks expectantly at the boy. The boy scoffs lightly and puts his hands on his hips. He raises his eyebrows.
Kyuhyun smiles and shakes his head as he grabs a plastic cup. “Caramel macchiato upside-down,” he recites mechanically, although the hint of bemusement is impossible to hide. He removes the cap from the permanent marker with his teeth and grins as he says with a lisp, “Name?” When the boy scoffs again and gives Kyuhyun a soft pinch on his arm, Kyuhyun sighs amusedly.
“Sungmin,” he writes, saying the name softly for the boy to hear. Sungmin cocks his eyebrows up again, a sly smirk playing on his lips. Kyuhyun laughs in disbelief, but adds the heart after his name anyway.
--
They walk in silence, arms hanging limply at their sides. For a long while, all that can be heard is their shallow breathing and the crunching of snow beneath their feet. Kyuhyun steals a glance at Sungmin from beside him, and finds the older boy staring at the ground in front of him with an obvious sadness in his eyes. Kyuhyun resists every urge to reach over and comfort the boy, but he knows that there is still that line he had drawn for himself, and he plans not to cross it.
Kyuhyun wonders at the sound of their matching footsteps, a sort of beautiful harmony, kind of like how two lovers’ heartbeats would pulse to one rhythm, yet he frowns subtly. He tries desperately to walk just one pace faster, but Sungmin seems oblivious and trudges a little quicker, and their footsteps harmonize again.
“Kyu,” Sungmin says softly after some time. “Do you think it’s worth it?” Kyuhyun turns his head to finally look at him. They stop walking.
“What are you talking about?” Kyuhyun asks, even though he is fully aware of what the other boy means. He shifts his weight from one leg to another and shoves his hands deeper into his pockets. Sungmin smiles sadly and closes his hand. He crosses his arms and laughs hollowly, and starts to walk again. He dismisses the subject by shaking his head.
“Guess not,” Sungmin mumbles under his breath, a misplaced smile on his face.
--
Sungmin flinches when Kyuhyun touches his shoulder. The hurt is evident on Kyuhyun’s face, but Sungmin lifts the corner of his lips anyway and shrugs a little.
“Hyung,” the younger boy mutters almost too quietly. “No one can see us now. You don’t have to-“
“That’s the point,” Sungmin intervenes. Kyuhyun stares at him with a puzzled gaze. Sungmin stands from his spot on Kyuhyun’s living room floor and looks as if he is about to cry. “I don’t get why we have to do this.”
Kyuhyun refuses to look at him, and instead toys with the hem of his shirt. “You know what people would say if they… “ His voice trails off and neither speaks for a while.
“If they, what?” Sungmin finally says. “Kyuhyun, I’m tired of hiding out like this. You know very well how much I love being with you, and it hurts me every time we have to pretend and hide and-“ He doesn’t finish his sentence as tears start to trickle down his cheek. Kyuhyun stands and slowly approaches him. Sungmin doesn’t flinch, doesn’t move away when Kyuhyun wraps an arm around his waist and kisses his forehead.
“I know,” Kyuhyun says softly against his skin. “I…”
Sungmin smiles sadly again and pushes away from him. A lack of words hangs loudly as he leaves the room.
--
Sungmin arrives in front of the counter again, as usual with his chipper attitude and cracked smile. This time, Kyuhyun pays no attention to the clock and notices him immediately. He grabs a cup from the stand and automatically starts making the drink without a word exchanged between the two of them. Sungmin notes that Kyuhyun doesn’t make a move to mark his name on the cup.
“Not a long day today?” Sungmin inquires as Kyuhyun adds the lid to the cup. Kyuhyun’s fingers linger around the warm surface. He just smiles and shrugs in response.
“Kyuhyun-sshi! We need you back here for a moment!” a voice calls out from the back of the shop. Kyuhyun hands over the cup to Sungmin and mumbles a small apology along with a quick turn of his lips before retreating to the back.
Sungmin seats himself by the window to wait for the end of Kyuhyun’s shift, idly spinning the cup in his hands. He notices his name written carefully on the side with the usual heart in front of it. He smiles.
--
They walk again in silence, but the snow had melted from the day before, and now their footsteps make a soft click as their shoes make contact with the pavement. Their arms still hang by their side, and Sungmin still watches the ground in front of him.
Kyuhyun suddenly stops walking and turns towards him. He shuffles on his feet and clears his throat as he pulls his hands out from his pockets. He holds a hand out to Sungmin, palm outturned and pink from the chill. Sungmin stares at the offered hand and forgets how to breathe. He takes a cautious look around them, and sees the usual people bustling about.
“Walk…with me?” Kyuhyun proposes shyly, a blush coloring his cheeks. Sungmin beams and carefully takes the hand in his. They resume walking and forget when their fingers became interlaced.
--
Sungmin stops coming to get his usual cup of coffee. He stops calling 24 seconds after Kyuhyun steps into his apartment. He stops leaving cheesy post-it messages on his fridge. Kyuhyun thinks his heart just stopped beating.
--
Two weeks, four hours, and thirty-seven seconds (Kyuhyun refuses to count milliseconds. His watch isn’t capable of it) later, Kyuhyun finds himself staring at the door of the coffee shop, hoping for the two-hundredth and forty-seventh time that a bundle of pink would come bouncing in with that cheeky grin and glittering eyes. He sighs dejectedly and replaces the cup with Sungmin’s name back under the stack of coffee cups. As if as an afterthought, Kyuhyun pulls the cup out again and grabs a marker.
I miss you, he writes in smaller letters under Sungmin’s name. He makes a noise from the back of his throat and throws the paper cup across the counter, rolling partly under the pastry display. He signs his timecard and leaves early.
--
“Cho Kyuhyun… is he here?” Sungmin asks the girl at the counter. “This is usually his shift… where is he?” He looks slightly panicked, and the girl just bites her lips.
“I don’t know,” she answers apologetically. “He left earlier than usual today.” She gives a small bow and continues to tidy up. She tsks as she finds a misplaced cup near the pastries.
“Tch, Kyuhyun needs to get better organization skills.” She scrunches her nose as she reads the written-on cup. “And better things to do with his life. So corny.” She shakes her head in amusement.
“W-wait!” Sungmin calls out, catching a glimpse of the writing. “C-can I have that, please?” His eyes plead with hers and she smiles as she hands it over to him.
“Don’t try to be a matchmaker now,” she teases, her eyes sparkling. “Is she your sister or friend or something?”
Sungmin stares at her quizzically. “Who?”
She points to the cup in his hands. “Sungmin,” she says with a laugh. “Kyuhyun is too good looking to not have a girlfriend. Although… I think the name suits a guy better.”
Sungmin furrows his eyebrows together. “I am Sungmin,” he says slowly. His stomach flips when the girl’s expression changes.
“R-really?” she breathes out with a nervous chuckle. “W-well… uhm… I… okay.” She leaves him with one more accusing stare before retreating to the backroom.
--
“I-is Sungmin-sshi here?” Kyuhyun asks the lady at the door. He shifts his weight from one leg to the other, his hands stuffed into his pockets.
“Oh, Sungmin? I believe my son just went out for a little bit,” the lady answers with a warm smile. “Come in, and you can wait for him in his room.” She laughs when Kyuhyun shoots her a nervous glance. “I’m afraid that his room is the only clean area in the house.” She steps aside to let Kyuhyun through the door.
“First room on the left,” she tells him, pointing across the room. Kyuhyun tips his head and thanks her.
The first thought that comes into his mind as soon as he steps into the room is, Wow. This is definitely Sungmin. He quietly laughs at the pink curtains, the pink bed sheets, the pink pillows, the pink everything. Kyuhyun marvels at the realization that Sungmin’s room could easily pass as his younger sister’s room.
He walks towards the dresser, and the two stacks of coffee cups atop the dresser catches his attention. His eyes narrow as he picks up the considerably smaller stack and freezes as he recognizes the handwriting on the cup.
Sungmin. Crm.mch.upsdwn., is identical on all four cups of the pile. Kyuhyun sets down the cups and lifts off a couple from the other stack (Twenty-three total, he counts). His heart lurches as he reads his familiar scrawls again on the cups.
Sungmin <3
Kyuhyun notices that Sungmin had washed out the cups, though the faint smell of coffee and the light teeth marks along the edges is still present. He smiles sadly.
“Kyuhyun?”
Kyuhyun quickly sets the cups back down, and turns towards Sungmin’s voice. Silence exchanges between the two, and Kyuhyun swears he can hear his own heartbeat. Seconds seem to stretch to eternity, and the few feet separating the two of them grows steadily. Kyuhyun keeps his gaze locked onto Sungmin’s eyes, and he finds himself inching closer to the boy at the door.
“Kyu-“ Sungmin breaks the silence, but is interrupted when Kyuhyun suddenly hooks an arm around his waist. Kyuhyun brings his other arm across his hyung’s shoulders, and holds Sungmin’s head against his chest.
“Don’t ever do that again,” he whispers into Sungmin’s neck, his voice slightly trembling. He weakly curls his fingers and strokes Sungmin’s waist, and finally lets out his unshed tears.
--
They sit across from each other during Kyuhyun’s break. Sungmin caresses the side of the cup with his thumb and chews the inside of his cheek.
“Why’d you disappear like that?” Kyuhyun finally asks, his voice low. Sungmin continues to rub patterns onto the surface.
“I couldn’t take it anymore,” he confesses quietly. “The people… they kept talking and accusing and I just couldn’t take it anymore.”
Kyuhyun scoffs and his hands find their way up onto his face. “You are so selfish.” Sungmin lifts his eyes to glance up at Kyuhyun. “I can’t believe you… I even… since when did you care about what people thought?” Sungmin’s heart throbs painfully against his chest as Kyuhyun’s expression hardens.
“No, you don’t understand,” Sungmin pleads. “If they were talking about me, I would have taken it. But they were talking about you, Kyuhyun. You don’t know how much it hurt… hearing people say such horrible things about you. People have assumed I was gay since I was in middle school, so it doesn’t affect me anymore. But…” He stops, not knowing how to explain himself anymore. He goes back to drawing imaginary lines and circles onto his coffee cup with his thumbs.
“Kyuhyun-sshi! Break time is over!”
Kyuhyun wordlessly gets up from his seat and retreats back to the counter. Sungmin reminds himself to breathe.
--
They walk again in silence. Sungmin wraps his coat around his body tighter, the winter chill biting at his skin. He gets a sense of déjà vu as he stares at the ground in front of him and hears the noise of the snow crunching underneath their heels. Kyuhyun’s arms still hang limply at his sides.
Sungmin takes a deep breath and peeks at Kyuhyun from the corner of his eyes. He swallows and reaches over to take Kyuhyun’s hand in his, and Kyuhyun stops walking. Sungmin thinks his heart might break.
Kyuhyun looks at him, nose pink from the cold, and laces his fingers through Sungmin’s own. Kyuhyun places an oddly warm hand against his cheek and leans down to kiss him, his mouth pleasantly hot in contrast to the chill. He grins shyly as he pulls away, his eyes soft. Sungmin beams and kisses him again.
--
They resume walking in silence, warm hand against warm hand, footsteps in harmony, the shadow of insecurity falling behind them.
--
(“Hyung, why did you save all of those coffee cups?” Kyuhyun asks as they huddle together on the couch.
Sungmin grins childishly and presses his fingertips against his own cheek. “As evidence,” he answers as-a-matter-of-factly. Kyuhyun narrows his eyes at him questioningly.
“Evidence of…?”
“My happiness,” Sungmin says with a giggle and throws up his hands. “After my fourth visit to the coffee shop, you became my boyfriend.” He beams from ear to ear. “And then the twenty-three cups is proof of how long we’ve been seeing each other.”
Kyuhyun frowns. “But we’ve been together for longer than that,” he points out. Sungmin just smiles again.
“How do you count forever with coffee cups?”)
