“This is … amazing.”
When Inara stepped into the TARDIS for the first time, Jack couldn’t help the smile that crossed his face. The TARDIS was always something that reminded him of the better times in his life, even if she spent most of her time trying to run away from him. But he wanted Inara to see it, if for nothing else to understand a little better where he came from. She turned around to face them, a wide smile on her face as she did.
“I … I feel like I’m dreaming. Can this really go anywhere?”
“Anywhere you want,” Jack nodded, moving up behind her. “Anywhere in time and space.”
She placed her hands over his on the console, the smile was on her face the entire time. She felt the hum coming up from the heart of the TARDIS, and she glanced back at him. “It’s almost like she’s alive.”
“Oh, she’s more than that,” the Doctor said with a smile as he made his way closer. “She’s got a mind of her own, this one.” There was a beat of silence as he stroked the console for a moment, before looking over at her with a bright grin. “So! Where are we going? I think it’s only fair that we do the lady’s pick first, don’t you Captain?”
“I couldn’t agree more, Doctor.”
“Well, then Inara-where do you want to go?”
Jack waited, watched as her eyes went between the two men for a moment, trying to judge if they were serious. “Anywhere?”
“Anywhere at all.”
“Even-Earth-That-Was?”
“Absolutely,” he grinned. “Oh, I love Earth. Wonderful planet. Maybe we’ll get there around Christmas. Christmas was always so interesting on Earth.”
“Doctor-”
“Right. We have to get there first. Jack, a little assistance.”
“Yes, sir.” He moved from behind Inara towards the controls as the Doctor directed and, Inara just stood there, watching them as they moved around the console.
“Is there anything I can do to help?”
“For right now? You just watch,” the Doctor nodded, grinning for a moment as he stopped in front of the steering wheel. “Look at that. I have a Companion for a Companion.”
Inara frowned. “I don’t-”
“No one does,” Jack smirked. “You get used to it.” He glanced back over with a raised eyebrow. “To Earth, Doctor?”
“Right-oh! Twentieth centry Earth, coming right up.” He spun the wheel and the TARDIS started to move, rattling along through space. “Allon-sy!”
