Sofia squinted up into the Las Vegas sun, shielding her eyes as she searched the crowd for a familiar face. A New York CSI was flying in for the Burkawitz case and Sofia had been sent to pick them up. Nick claimed he didn’t know who it was but she knew it obviously wasn’t Stella because he would have taken it in a heartbeat. So that left Messer and Hawkes, and she was praying to God that it was the latter.

It wasn’t that she hated Danny. She didn’t-not really. He was an nice enough guy when he put his mind to it. He just really knew how to push her buttons. She didn’t like being stuck in confined spaces with him, when there was no one else for him to talk to, and that included cars.

She spotted a silhouette coming towards her, but she couldn’t make out who it was-the shadows on their face were too dark. She peered at the shape, trying to look for other discernable characteristics, but there was nothing she could really see. It wasn’t until he had gotten closer and started speaking that she figured out who it was.

“Curtis,” he grinned. “How’s it goin’?”

Damnit.

“Messer,” she sighed, crossing her arms in front of her chest. “It’s-goin’.”

“Good,” he nodded, before following her around to the hatch of the Denali. He blinked when he stepped out from under over hang, and squinted at the shapes in front of him. “It’s too bright.”

“It’s called the sun,” Sofia teased, taking his bag from him. “We have one of those in Nevada.”

“Hah,” Danny replied, giving her a look. “We’ve got one of those in New York, too. It’s just not so-bright.”

“You said that.”

“Shut up,” he mumbled, before walking around to the passenger’s seat. He slid inside and listened as she shut the hatch, before climbing into the driver’s seat. “So,” he grinned, “when do we eat?”

“Is all you ever think about your stomach?” she asked, adjusting her sunglasses before starting the car.

“No-that would be Flack,” Danny smirked. I’m just thinking that the plane food sucked and I could go for some real food.”

“Look, just because you’re in from out of town, doesn’t mean I’m going to chauffer you everywhere,” she replied, turning to back the car out of the parking space. “I’m not going to sit somewhere and wait for you to finish eating.”

“Well-I did say we eat,” he pointed out. “As in you and me together.”

She glanced over at him before setting her eyes on the road again. “I can’t. Unlike you-I still have work.”

“So take a long lunch and show me around.”

“Danny-”

“C’mon, Curtis,” Danny said, flashing her a smile. “I’m on vacation here. Take me out, show me around.”

“Thought you were supposed to be working.”

“I have to testify in court. Otherwise, I’m free to do whatever I want,” he sighed. “In essence, that’s a vacation-or at least the closest thing I’ve gotten to one in a long time.” She sighed slightly, and she knew he could tell she was crumbling.

“Sofia, I’m begging you here,” he smiled. “I don’t know anywhere good to eat.”

“Fine,” she sighed. “But we’re just having lunch, and after that you go to your hotel, and I don’t have to deal with you for a few hours.”

“I have a feeling that was meant as an insult, but I’ll let it go,” Danny smirked.

“And you’re paying.”

“But I’m the guest-” She gave him a look that read ‘Do you really want to test me?’ and he let it go, before nodding. “Alright, second question-where are we eating?”

“I think I know a place-”

“That was some good food,” Danny sighed as he and Sofia walked out of the diner, squinting into the sun again.

“Yeah,” Sofia nodded. “I can see why the other guys come here so much.”

“Never been before?” he asked, surprised.

She shook her head, “I usually don’t hang out with them. One-on-one they’re alright, but in a group-I feel a bit left out.” Danny nodded, and she shrugged. “Besides, where I eat is probably out of your price range.”

“I have a feeling that’s another comment I should resent,” he sighed, sliding his hands into his pockets. “But again, I’m going to let it go.”

Sofia smirked at him, before climbing into the car. Danny followed her, and they sat in silence until they pulled up to the hotel where Danny was staying. He started to climb out of the car, but her speaking up stopped him.

“Did you really have a good time with me?” she asked, turning to look at him.

“Course I did,” he said, giving her a small smile. “Good food, good company-what more do I need?”

“Good company?” she frowned. “We spent the entire night sniping at each other.”

“Better than no company at all,” he replied, before getting his bags out of the back and waving her off. Sofia sat there for a minute, watching him before turning back to the car.

“Yeah,” she murmured. “Guess so.”
