Where there is technology, there is someone abusing it to screw with people. Always.

During the day, everyone I met was wearing a mask, and I got forced to wear one too. You didn't?

It could use some sort of method to re-direct people from the edges, like making the roads gradually curve. Or they could be outright manipulating our minds to make us think that.

Or this all a hallucination because I got way too drunk.
