[She is deeply concerned by this, always drown by the sounds of crying and of screaming, ears finely attuned to it after so many years listening in the night for any signs of fear from Lucie. Perhaps she also knows that sense of sorrow and rage, fear and despair, her body just as attuned to listening for them.]

[He hesitates. The voice in his mind isn't familiar, nor is the use of Monsieur. He does know French, but it's been some time since he was addressed in that language, so it draws him away from the rush of images and emotion that consumes him, long enough for him to express himself in return, in words that make some kind of sense, though there's a disconnect between what she's said and his reply. The meaning didn't get through to him, just the mere fact of someone speaking to him.]
Father, I asked for my father to come, and then he came.
[He had asked for his father. He'd only been a child; he hadn't known. My dad's a hero, he's going to be here to rescue me. It wasn't fair. He hadn't meant to. He turns toward the PORTAL, and it's possible to see that his eyes--both irises and whites--are glowing, green-blue, though the rest of him remains unaffected.]
He won't leave me now.
[And it does appear, then, as if there is a man standing behind him, looming over him as he kneels on the floor: heavyset, blonde, and masked, half-

[Yuri laughs. He rises to his feet, and for a minute, he is younger--not a child, but a smaller, leaner adolescent. This, too, is just an impression of his mind. The nearest thing at hand is a teacup, and he hurls it at the image of his father. It passes through, shattering against the wall beyond. Yuri stumbles back, collapsing on the couch, laughing again--a tense, nearly hysterical laughter, and then he is his actual age again.]
