There are Vita-Chambers stationed around the city. [He chuckles.] I wonder where they could have come from?

... I was wondering. For those of you who have been here for an inordinate amount of time, how long exactly has it been?

[Private to Jack:]I have another question to pose for you. Why were you revived by the Vita-Chambers in Rapture, when ( Read more... )

It's been just under nine months for me.

What are Vita-Chambers?

Nine months? ... [Sigh.] That's more than enough time spent here.

It's not that bad, once you get used to it.

Hm. Yes, there are a number of places that I would count worse than this one.

[Oh, that struck a nerve.]

I don't know. I didn't really have time to stop and think about it. [You know, with all the splicers and Big Daddies and Ryan's personal mechanized security detail.]

[GOOD.]

Well. That's obvious.

Think about it, then. You don't find it strange at all?

Yeah, I guess it is. But so is everything else down there. So is Rapture.

For those who had only been there a short time, perhaps. As I've said, you know very little about... well. Everything about that place.

Vita-Chambers?

The first of us who post on the network regularly like this came nine months ago, in January. It's been a pretty steady cycle ever since.

Yes, Vita-Chambers. Something from my 'world,' as they say. They appeared recently in Promenade.

So, the city came into existence nine months ago. Or, it started drawing in citizens then. Interesting.

What do they do?

Well, the people who were here before know us by name -- they've said we've been here all our lives.

[ She pauses, clearly wondering if she should say this next part, before she continues. ]

The longer you stay in the city, the more peoples memories of home typically fade. Most of the 'native' residents we see were probably just like us, once.

They're only prototypes, made to bring people back from the dead.

[That last bit is very interesting. And rather disturbing. Does he... or does he not... want to forget about Rapture?]

... Hm. That's not a comforting thought.

[Hey, that voice... Xion frowns. When Jack told her to stay away from Andrew Ryan, he showed her a video with him in it. She used her trained reconnaissance skills to memorize his face and voice, and so she's absolutely certain that that's who this is. Xion doesn't want to just repeat what others have said, though... But she wants to reply. She wants to learn more about this man, figure out why he's a threat to Jack, figure out a way to make sure he stops being a threat.

Hmmm... Maybe she can figure out what Vita-Chambers are on her own, so she doesn't have to ask. She dreams up a dictionary and tries to look up "Vita-Chambers," but winds up at "vitality" instead. "The power or ability to continue in existence, live, or grow"... Vita-Chambers... Rooms that are alive? No... The ability to continue in existence. Rooms that keep others alive.

She thinks for a long moment before turning her PORTAL on and replying.]

What do the "Vita-Chambers" look like? I'm not sure if I've seen them.

Tall, glass columns. They're typically seen with electricity crackling inside.

And, they do not open.

They don't open? [Xion frowns. That goes against what it sounds like they do...] So, then, what are they supposed to do?

They are prototypes, created by the scientists of Rapture to return people from death.
