[To anyone who gets motion sick easily: sorry. Harry's copied Rebecca's awesome computer chair, but made it even better: its a rolly chair now! And typical of any man-child, he's spinning back and forth as he addresses the PORTAL.]

So, hello Promenadians... Promenaders...whichever. For the newcomers, I'm Harry Dresden and I'm a wizard. A few months ( Read more... )

[Have a skeptical look, Harry.] You made circles for protective wards?

Ain't that the truth...

You got tulpas back where you're from, or are your summoners the real deal?

Tulpas? When I say "summoning" its more like...really earnest beckoning. Stuff comes but its only for a specific purpose, most of the time.

There's magicks like that back home, too, but... Well, there are these "summoners" back home who get these ideas in their head that they can call angels an' demons an' all kinds-a fey an' whatnot to their command. Only ever been one or two in all of history that ended up bein' legit; the rest all ended up bein' complete crocks, or they ended up just makin' tulpas of whatever they thought they was callin', an' they usually believed they was the real thing. An' them tulpas... [He shakes his head.] Real nasty pieces-a work, more often than not.

[ Grimacing.]

Sounds a lot like warlocks there. Wizards who go dark, violate the Laws of Magic. Think they can control, or worse, are entitled to power they're not.

[He shakes his head again.] Seen a fair few witches in my time that weren't no better.

Actually, seems like most the witches I ever had the misfortune-a meetin' weren't no better'n that.

Those always suck.

[And there's all sorts of uncomfortable memories around warlocks for him. A lot of gruesome, terrible memories that still stir a lot of conflicted thoughts in him.]

So, Im curious. How do you go about making your barriers?

Well, that all depends on what kinda magicks are right for the job. I've got just about every kind there is all carved up in my grimoire-'cept for those prescribed by the Grant coven, 'course.

So you have a spellbook?

[Harry is a wizard in a cool coat. Elijah is a wizard in a cowboy hat?]

Ah... Ain't a book, exactly. Not that kinda grimoire.

S'that how you keep most magicks where you're from? Books an' such?

No, we just...memorize our stuff.

feycarved May 21 2011, 22:01:04 UTC
Right... Well, most magicks back home are a little too, uh...complicated to memorize just right. S'why people started bindin' them magicks to their bodies, so they wouldn't have to memorize nothin'.

An' what they started bindin' 'em into, that's what we call grimoires.
