Stunning, breath-takingly sensual, and an utterly delightful read. I hope Erik wrote Charles a morning-after poem before he leaves, in accordance with Heian-period lovers' etiquette. Sweet!

Oh, that would have been lovely! though technically he didn't leave, not even in the morning, so there might not have been a need for a poem. Still, it might have been something like this:

you are light and dawn
that I must not, will not, flee.
always returning.

Glad to know he didn't leave in the morning, though it's nice that you also believe that an exchange of poetry is the de rigeur way to cap off lovers' encounters. Once again, I've got to take my hat off to you for coming up with such lovely lines in a flash. Coming back to the fic, I just have to add how much I loved the way you used little details like the moonlight, the rustling of silk, and the scent of pine and musk intermingling with sweat to convey a dreamlike, sensually-charged atmosphere. I know this will most likely stay a stand-alone fic, but you've done a smashing job hitting all my kink buttons that I couldn't help wondering about this Charles and Erik's backstories---like what's a young lord with Charles' obvious gifts doing in someplace remote that's probably far from the Capital, how long have he and the Evening known each other, things like that. Begging your pardon for letting my imagination run away with me!

I can't forget the idea of the morning-after poem since I remember it so vividly from both the Genji monogatari and The Tale of Murasaki.

Credit for the idea of Erik as a tengu, called the Evening, and Charles as the young lord comes from Keio and a series of artworks called "A Thousand Years of Loneliness", collected at kannibal.tumblr.com. Initially the series had to do with Erik as a hunter and Charles as a kitsune-type spirit who stayed with him; then reversed so that Erik was the spirit entity watching over Charles's mortal character. I'm not the only person who wrote about that second incarnation, by the way; check out http://archiveofourown.org/works/373138, The Tale of X by thehoyden.
