Tonight in therapy we examined a poem that gave me some perspective.

It took a bit of figuring, but I really liked it.

The Wild Geese, by Mary Oliver ( Read more... )

for decades i found the Desiderata suspect- syrupy- but then one day when i was in the middle of the major depressive episode that kept me off work for a year, the phrase "You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should." hit me, or rather held me up- if it's not clear to me that the universe is unfolding as it should, does that mean, maybe i don't need to be "a bad person" because i can't detect how it's unfolding, can't "fix" it, am not in charge, it's not my fault because it's not my job...

it was such a relief. SUCH relief.

and since then i've spent more time learning from the trees and the stars.

like the geese. i'm just here, now.
