Tainted Chapter 1
Chapter 1
Sifting the gruel around his plate, Bam gave a sigh and stared out the window. His breath caused the window to fog up and he gave another sigh. Then he came to an inside agreement. Tonight was the night. Tonight was the night that he would finally run away and be free. He didn’t know where he was going, nor how he would survive, but anything was better than this. Anything was better than a life living to please others. Bam sat on the window sill and listened intently to the sounds of the household above him, waiting for the right time to come…
Bam sped across the field, wrapped in an old black cloak to hide him from any prowling eyes. He couldn’t hear the shouting anymore, which means he could have lost them amongst the trees. Still, he couldn’t take any chances, so he ran faster. He pushed his body to limits he didn’t even know he had. His bare feet ached and bled, his legs hurt from running the entire night and his chest burned from the ice cold air he was forcing into his lungs. Snow began falling from the sky and he cursed himself for choosing such a night to try to escape.
His eyes were looking around wildly for any place that he could hide. Only, he could barely see in the darkness of the night. His lungs burned and he knew he had to stop soon. But there was no where to hide. No where he could find a place to stave out the night. If he wasn’t so scared he would have realised that the main house would have given up searching for him for now, but he was far beyond seeing reason. All he could do was run, everything but his legs had shut off in panic. So he pushed himself, burning up all the adrenaline that kept him moving.
Bam could see the morning rays of sunlight now, which meant he had been running all night. He stopped for a second to catch his breath that was now increasingly hard to take. It was so cold; a blanket of white was forming across the ground. He tried pushing himself onwards again, but found his body wouldn’t respond. He tried to fight exhaustion, but in the end it overwhelmed him and he fell to the ground, his world darkening.
