Netflix is likely encoding for shitty devices, since don't they let you stream to various media things?

Though our TV plays H.264 from...shall we say, unofficial sources just fine, and when I fed it something encoded with think-it's-Apple-something-I-dunno from a camera, it refused to work :p.

they're using VC-1 (i.e. Windows Media Video codec). It would also save them on bandwidth bills if they re-encoded another stream =p
