Because it wasn't obvious otherwise.

You might be a nerd if...

You go to the mall in your ThinkGeek shirt...

To buy the new Terry Pratchett book...

And come back with the book...

Plus a new DS case...

Plus new iPod cables...

Plus a 500GB portable hard drive.

Woops. On the plus side now I have somewhere to put all my mp3s.

Yay for new Pratchettness! We picked ours up on Saturday. I will start reading it tonight (wanted to finish The Order of the Phoenix first).

Hard drives DIE. Often. Especially big ones. Got the cash? Get two, run them raid1. Your music collection is worth a lot more than the spindles made by underpaid factory workers in China. You don't wanna bank on it spinning up just one last time when you realise you'ven not got backups as it starts making the whirry clicky noise of death :)

I tend to have backups of everything don't fear. I don't want to bother raiding any single machine, I use too many too often to make it worth steroiding one machine over the other which is why the portable drive is a good option since it will end up being a mirror of my desktop at home.

Incidentally I must also add that I replace hardware enough that I've never in my life had a hard drive run out its serviceable life while in my care.

Yah I hear you, it's the ones that have died within 2 months of buying them that bug the hell out of me - doesn't matter if it's under warranty, the warranty can't majik me the data back :\ That's a hell of a lot of music though!
