If you've ever seen the movie "Love Actually," there's a montage where Colin Firth's character is using audio tapes to learn Portuguese, and some of the statements are just funny - for example, "This is an enormous fish!" Might be a place to start.
A group of us were going to Spain a number of years ago and decided to try and learn some Spanish from some Michael French CDs one guy's parents had. The course didn't seem to cover anything that might be useful in basic conversation - how to buy stuff, order in a restaurant, ask directions - that you might need as a tourist. It did teach us how to ask people's opinions on the political and economic situation however, which I'm sure would be very useful when trying to buy bread!
The one thing that stuck in my mind was the bizarre overpronounciation of 'no lo necis-EET-o' - it is not necessary. This did come in useful about 8 years later when I was in Peru and buying a bottle of water from a shop. The shop assistant was about to put my bottle of water into a carrier bag, and the phrase popped into my head, and I proudly told him that it wasn't neccesary to give me a bag for my water!
