From Minnesota here. Our state has lots (lots!) of state parks that provide ample space for camping and hiking. Here's our state website which has lots of info that could help you. Check out all the tabs on the top of the page, there's tons of different topics. For a person who just wants to walk along a path in my area of the state, there is the Glacial Ridge trail, which runs from Willmar to Alexandria. Here's more info on the Glacial Ridge trail.As far as trespassing goes, lots of farmers will allow people to go into their fields for hunting (so long as they stay away from their homes, for safety reasons), but for farmers that don't want people on their lands, there are no tresspassing signs posted along their fences. Most people don't go hiking/backpacking in fields because the flat land is boring and there are so many state parks available to them (for the price of a 12-month parking permit

I live in Iowa, and we do have some walking paths. But they aren't necessarily connected to all the other walking paths even within a single city. Walking across Iowa as a whole would require walking along some normal car roads. Actually, quite a few car roads
