For those who haven't heard of Paulo Coelho;

1) What kind of rock have you been living under?
2) Go buy a copy of The Alchemist right now, and, if you have a little extra cash, pick up a copy of Eleven MinutesFor those who have heard of him and have read the book that made him world famous and may have, like me, been a little less than impressed ( Read more... )

I think you'll like it. I like Coelho a lot, he manages to take metaphysical fiction and keep it interesting and not too "touchy-feely." Eleven Minutes seems almost, to me, like the kind of novel Anais Nin would have liked to have written.

The rock I'm living under is called the United States of America.

As for erotica, erm, it's just not my cup of tea. I've never felt very interested in reading what some have disdained as "literary porn." Part of the reason you read a book is because something intrigues you, you want to learn more about it, or because it's similar to your life. Sexual discovery is neither similar to my life nor something I'm really interested in.

The Alchemist, OTOH, looks like a kickass novel. One reviewer says it's for 6th graders in it's simplicity, but the fact that a book can garner so much attention with that kind of simplicity inspires me--or at the very least doesn't make me feel nearly as bad about my own novels.

not all erotica is literary porn. some writing is just deeply sensual without being sexually explicit, other writing is profoundly explicit, to the point where you don't really think you should read it while waiting in a lobby.

i'm a fan of erotica. it's always interesting to me what sparks other people's fire.

Lol, he's pretty huge here in the states, actually, so I'm afraid your rock would have to get more specific. Also, to avoid confusion, it's not erotica by any stretch of the imagination. And the Alchemist is, indeed, a kick ass novel.

Upstate New York. Burned over district. Mini Bible Belt. Ugh.

Well, I thought you mentioned erotica. My mistake. That makes it a bit better, but sexual discovery simply isn't one of my interests.

Actually, reading more about this guy Coelho, I should really pick up his books. It says he's a "fabulist" writer, which is what I mentioned in my last post, my new interest. This should be good.
