Layla Miller Info Post

Who is Layla Miller? Why she's a girl from the Marvel Comics universe who knows stuff. How does she know stuff? Well because she's Layla Miller, of course!

...

What? That's not enough? Meh. Fine. But I'm giving you the abridged version:

Layla Miller: A brief history
Layla Miller (Codenamed "Butterfly") first appeared during the events in the Marvel Universe known as the "House of M" where she became a plot device key figure in reawakening various heroes from the remade reality that was created by the Scarlet Witch. As a mutant in this reality she had the ability to see the true reality around her and could reach into people's minds to make them remember everything as it was.

There's some debate on whether or not Layla actually existed before the Scarlet Witch re-created the world and was in fact something created as a "safeguard" for the reality to help the heroes in case something went wrong. If it's true? Then Layla now knows about it. And she isn't telling anyone.

After the events of "House of M", the world was remade once again, this time with the Scarlet Witch uttering the words "No More Mutants" and wiping out almost the entire population of mutants in the Marvel Universe. For Layla this meant waking up in an orphanage remembering everything that had happened. And instead of having the ability to "re-awakened" people she now "knew stuff" though she won't reveal exactly how that came about. Shortly thereafter, she showed up at the offices of X-Factor Investigations, a private investigation firm based out of New York’s Mutant Town, intending to prevent them from ever learning the truth behind M-Day. She became an integral part of the office, doing file work, messing with people's heads and indirectly guiding the firm through various adventures using her ability to "Know Stuff".

Eventually this led to Layla and one of Jamie's dupes to investigate an alternate future caused by the birth of the mutant messiah (This one called "Hope". Not "Jan". I really wish Marvel would consult with mouthy_merc and spring_lost sometimes.) While there, they discover that the mutants are living in internment camps. They learn from a child version of Bishop that the mutant messiah had caused this world. Layla then proceeds to kill the dupe to send the information back to the original Jamie, leaving her alone and stranded in the future.

Layla eventually escapes the internment camp and joins up with an older version of Scott Summers and his daughter Ruby starting a revolt against the government that comes to be known as the "Summers Rebellion".

She then grows up during the Summers Rebellion helping guide the rebels much like she did for X-Factor back in her original time line. And while there is more to tell? It gets into the current issues of X-Factor so I'm going I'm not going it any further to avoid spoilers and some possible future plotlines I might want to play with.

For the purpose of the game I will be taking Layla to Fandom sometime in between the start of the Summers Rebellion and before Jamie Madrox appears for a second time in the future. It's important to note that while this Layla isn't from multi_madrox's universe, she does know who he is and won't be afraid to mess with his head. How and why, you ask?

Layla Miller: She knows stuff

The best description I've seen regarding Layla's current powers is that she has the ability of "Quantum Precognition". This ability allows her to see paths of causality to their ultimate conclusion and can then manipulate events to prevent or cause these events. As a part of her power she can "see" a person's real history and future at a detailed level. She also knows the detailed sequence of events that will occur in her immediate area and manipulate those events as well. So far she has also shown some signs of knowing global events as well but it's unknown how much she can affect those events. She also isn't afraid to use those abilities to take out anyone who is going to get in her way. Just to give you an example of how she does this:

ETA:All of the above has changed because now she got her brain zapped by her older self with eighty or so years of information about her life and general history. She still knows detailed stuff of what will happen around her and what not but now it's not all "SHE'S A PRECOG". Thanks PAD!

She Knows Stuff: An example of her powers (Image heavy)

First we have Monet and Layla chatting about the broken bath fixture. Seems innocent, no?

Well that's all well and good until an assassin shows up intending to kill one of the team members. Guess who gets to stop him?

And how exactly is a small girl going to stop an assassin with a knife?

Yeah. She's a little creepy sometimes. (She also once stopped a kidnapping by ordering four pizzas to be delivered and telling a hardware store owner the results of a certain horse race. But that's another story) But the fun doesn't stop there:

And how does a young girl get rid of a body?

Actually it's $1000 dollars and a lot of bubble wrap:

You can't really read the sign on the body but it says "Stay out of Mutant Town! xoxoxo X-Factor" It's the xoxoxo part that amuses me the most.

And if that doesn't creep you out at all?

She thinks that Jamie Madrox is a dreamboat. 'Nuff said.

How to use this power to your character's advantage/disadvantage:

Basically all you need to do is drop me an e-mail and let me know what you'd like to have happen. Need two characters to hook up? A certain character to walk into a bad/good situation at just the right time? Layla will work behind the scenes to manipulate events so that your character unwittingly ends up exactly where you need them to be. It will typically involve very minor actions that create a series of events that changes certain paths of your characters. So... yeah. Layla's technically still a plot device. But she's a fun one!

But what if I don't want to have her know stuff about my character?

First of all I'm not going to have Layla reveal anything about your character's past or future without your OOC permission. Something might be expressed narratively but never voiced.

However if you want a complete blanket of her not knowing your character's past and future here are exceptions to Layla's abilities as certain characters in canon gave her a kind of "blind spot" to them. These are usually characters who have some sort of powers related to chaos or have some sort of spell/technology which blocks her abilities. Layla's learned the hard way that when you run into any of those type of people that it's best to distrust them and keep them in observation until she can somehow shove them into the path of a train when said person tries to kill her. So, yeah she may not know your past but she's not going to trust you any farther than she can throw you.

So to help everyone out, you can "opt out" of having Layla know your past and future and can do so by commenting below. There will also be cases where if I don't know enough about your character's background I may impose a blackout on your character just so I don't screw up something vital in a conversation.

Make sense?
