Those comparisons are pretty spot on, though not quite what I was going for. But regarding them: I can't help but think Belgium's resistance was the kind Yang hoped for in Phezzan.
My idea was more about the reader's perspective (edit: and the perspective of FPA / Empire citizens & soldiers) on the scale of the war in LoGH. If LoGH had been set on Earth and dealt with war casualties reflective of the smaller population size, it wouldn't quite have the same effect as LoGH being set in space with regular war casualties on par with the population of mid-sized countries (Battle of Vermillion, 2 500 000 deaths; Mongolia, 2 671 000 people).
I think the World Wars had a similar effect on the people of that era, at least based on what I've heard.
