Halal Lamb Down Under

An interesting thing about the halal market in American is how much meat, specifically lamb, doesn’t come from America, or even Canada, but is raised, slaughtered and certified "down under" in New Zealand and Australia. In Canada, almost every grocery store carries Halal Lamb. I don't think it's so much a matter of supplying the Muslim markets, but that many New Zealand lamb outfits are certified. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe I saw on the BBC that when Hajj pilgrims have lambs slaughtered on their behalf, the slaughtering is done in Australia and/or New Zealand (probably because a. the lamb raising is plentiful there and b. easy logistics for distribution and of course c. what would one do with X Million slaughtered lambs in Saudi Arabia?). I don't think I've yet seen New Zealand lamb that *isn't* Halal certified

Up
