CLEANING THE KITCHEN firm_detective April 14 2009, 07:55:40 UTC
*L hurries into the kitchen with a stack of clean, plain towels, a bucket, an empty sprayer bottle, and a large bottle of disinfectant. He pauses for half an instant to cast a perturbed glance at his double, then sets his burden on the countertop, which is already clean.*

*This is a situation that he'd hoped would never arise. Now that it has, he finds himself compelled to be helpful -- more so than he would have expected. He begins to pull out the largest pans he can find, then fills them with water over the sink and sets them up to boil. They can't have enough boiling water.*

*Once the water boils, he sets some aside to cool, and dumps the rest into the bucket, adding disinfectant. The cooling water will be added to the spray bottle when it's not too hot, with more disinfectant; then, more water will be boiled.*

*While he waits, he looks out into the hall to see who can be conscripted.*

"Is that going to be enough?"

After helping L in here - feeling how much effort it took him just to walk down the hall, hearing how much pain he must be in - Matt can't seem to make himself do anything more than hover anxiously by L's side. He's going to help, of course he's going to help, it's a fucking emergency, but the thought of leaving him to contemplate being cut open on a kitchen table...

*A slight frown, while he thinks about it; he's trying to keep his hands away from his mouth.*

Maybe -- or maybe it will not be, but we can always get more. This is only for the cleaning, at the moment.

I think perhaps the table should be scrubbed down last, and then with straight disinfectant. It would be better not to take chances.

"Right. Yeah. Good plan."

He'll be able to contribute more once he's thinking straight again. Matt licks his lips, swallows nervously; he feels almost paralyzed. He knows it's just panic: Matt can't help freeze up when he's panicked, it'll go away soon.

"Should I help? Should I go to the wish room? We can't start - we can't do anything until the place is clean, right?"

WISH ROOM righteous_pen April 14 2009, 20:58:39 UTC
There are few people, Mikami thinks, looking around at the crowd outside the kitchen, who have less right to be here than he does. But he had to come. To do something. Because L is from his world, which makes him involved already, and more than that, because someone is hurt, possibly dying, and there's a word for the kind of person who stands by and lets that happen, isn't there?

There are already people cleaning, and others appearing in the corridor, wanting to know what's going on. He overhears the words need equipment, and raises a hand, speaking over the general murmur.

"How many people know the way to the wish room?"

"I can show you where it is."

It's Mikami, but Matt doesn't give a shit. All he cares about it getting this done, and getting it done right.

He's also suffering under the impression that if he's not by L's side for every single second, he ought to be helping to complete every single task that needs to be done.

"I know where it is. I was hoping to find how many others knew. To - carry things, or to wish, I don't know whether there's a limit on the number of wishes for one person..."

He's speaking too rapidly, more agitated by this than he has any right to be, and makes himself stop it.

"I'll go in first. Get the most important shit. Whatever I don't get, the next person can wish for, until we're asking for unnecessary stuff."

Unnecessary but really fucking useful, he means. A hospital bed might be nice, for one thing.

SURGERY THREAD \o/ cra_n_ky April 14 2009, 23:11:36 UTC
In striking contrast to the rest of the people in the general vicinity, Nate seems in relatively pleasant spirits today. He's performing a medical procedure for the first time in months, and the pre-op routine, as butchered as it may be at the moment, is still comforting. He washes his hands and arms with hospital-grade antibiotic soap, then places an apron over his scrubs and snaps on a pair of new purple non-latex gloves.

"Okay, taking volunteers for nurses. If I don't get any volunteers, I'll just choose a few of you."

"I'm bad with blood, like- really bad with it, but I'm good with a microscalpel. My hands are steady. If there's no one else."

She's watching from the door with a kind of horrified expression on her face.

"I can't promise I won't be sick, though."

Nate sighs. "Look, just- there won't be much blood. I'm attempting to make it minimally invasive. If you're good with your hands, I need you regardless of whatever trauma you have." He beckons her in. "Don't touch anything until you've washed yourself. Get a pair of scrubs; there should be some on the counter next to the sink. Change. Soap up your arms to the elbow. Put on gloves."

"Okay. I'll try."

She hurries to the sink to do as she's told. She'll be there, and she'll be steady when he needs her.

THE HALLWAY chilichoc April 14 2009, 23:39:34 UTC
*Mel goes back into the hallway after she's done all she can in the kitchen, and leans against the wall, one foot resting on it so the gun at her hip can be seen.*

And a moment later, Teru and Miles run up to her, distressed. Teru pales a little when he sees the gun, but it's Mel, she must have it for a good reason.

"...Mel-san? What's happening?"

"Did someone get hurt? Is the ghost back?"

The rumours have gotten a little out of hand, by this point.

[ Beyond has heard as well. He follows after little Teru and Miles, looking worried. He doesn't say anything, but he stands quietly behind Miles, waiting for an answer. ]
