Oh honey, I am so sorry. I'm not a crier either, but I sobbed when we had 2 of our cats put down within the past 4 months. Ping died back in April and Isis just two weeks ago. There's a depth and sharpness to the grief of losing an animal. Their love is pure and simple and unconditional.
Cry as much as you need to, and remember that I'm always here for you. *hugs*

I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm a little misty eyed for you. I think dogs and cats are on the same grief level as parents for me (and probably children..though I'll never know). I was a total basket case that time I came close to losing Special and was actually told by the vet that I might need to put her down.
It's triply hard because we are responsible for them, they love us unconditionally, and we can't explain what's happening. Just remember that you gave Sam a good life full of love and happiness.
