And start ramble - Now bantiarna September 10 2009, 14:19:54 UTC
My brother and I have a theory about why certain people love or hate a band. Most bands have a "sound" a favored couple of keys they play in, certain patterns of arrangement, favorite instruments, etc. They then produce a certain tonal quality which a lot of things like genius and pandora play off of.
Bo and I believe that people are attuned to certain tonal qualities and not to others. Almost like brain chemistry. Certain bands really appeal to some people and are terribly grating to others.
For example, Dave Mathews. Some people just LOVE this band. I find them almost painful to listen to. I cannot really pinpoint what it is about them. I cannot find an exception, a song that I do like.

But anyway, thats kind of my explaination as to why some people just cannot tolerate a band that someone else loves (See Vince's discussion yesterday about Rush - long rambling technical songs aside, they do have a very distinctive sound)

I can see bits of that. My perspective though, is that just 'cos you may not find something particularly palatable doesn't negate its technical proficiency or impact to someone else. Like, I like DMB. I know a lot of ppl cannot stand his voice. It's not a great musical voice, but in my perception, it works with the music 'cos it's another instrument. Similar thought w/ Tori Amos and Amanda Palmer - their voices are instruments used IN the music, not alongside it (though Tori does have some incredible pipes on her, to me, her voice is so entrenched in the music itself, it's almost indistinguishable). Sometimes, the voice is a separate piece, in and of itself; sometimes it's enmeshed completely -- but if you hate that instrument, it can be difficult to look past it to the rest of what's going on.

Well just to clarify, I did not mean Dave Matthews the person, I meant the band.

I agree whole heartedly that the voice is another instrument in the band and is separate from the lyrics. The best lyrics in the world can be ruined by a bad singer.

*nods* I see that - but for many, his voice ruins the whole thing, is where I was going with my thing. His phrasing is weird, his voice is kinda whiny. The music itself can be, on occasion, overly impressed with itself, in a way. I can totally see why it does nothing for a lot of people.

And why other people think it's the bee's knees.
