I'm not too sure if this is what my friend had used while travelling, since all I recall was her mentioning that she used a website with a variation of couchsurfing in the url itself. http://www2.couchsurfing.com/

Lauryn will know for sure about the airports, but the one time I flew into NYC, LaGuardia was no problem. It was something like a 30 dollar taxi fare into midtown, but it was easy peasy.

i fly in and out of new york about once a month. i like jfk way better than laguardia. either are super easy to get out of, though, just follow the sign to the taxi line. just don't fly in on a sunday night or you'll be in that taxi line for two hours. and we have a couch and a rollaway bed that are always welcome to non-serial-killers.

i absolutely detest LGA. JFK, in my opinion, is a lot better. The reason I say this is because I never taxi in NY. I always take the subways, and from JFK, it's a piece of cake. I can help you with the subway system if you need it (it's a bit complicated. I found Paris' Metro easier, and that's saying something ( ... )

I pretty much agree with petalsinabasin. The east village has a lot of great book stores and record shops. It has gentrified a bit so some of the shops and streets are somewhat exclusive now (meaning I personally exclude myself because I could never afford what they sell). Brooklyn is a great place to be now, but best if you have a friend to guide you around. There is a fairly large contingent of ex-tucsoners, mostly artists, living in Brooklyn.

The subway is best and cheapest, unless you mind the piss smell of the subways. Personally if the NYC subways ever STOP smelling like piss I will reject ever using it again, because my memories and expectations of any good large cosmo city MUST have a pissy smelling subway, and the city itself MUST have that burnt-pretzel, roasted/burnt chestnut smell. This is why Los Angeles is not a real city and San Fran is.

I too am of the JFK-preferring crowd. Though I know many folks who say LGA is better (my mum and dad would never fly out of anywhere but LGA) I always found JFK easier to navigate and more comfortable (even when they were doing massive renovations, which I'm guessing are complete by now, but since NY is always being built and rebuilt, one can never know). I think LGA is only a better choice if you are driving there from somewhere in Westchester country or points north (or if, like my parents, you find the larger scale of JFK intimidating ( ... )
