There's a theory that goes that consumption of violent media - movies, TV, games, what have you - can result in increasingly violent behaviour on the part of the consumer. That the more violence we watch, the more desensitised we get, the less we value human life, and so on. That Columbine happened because of Doom and death metal, etc. It's a ( Read more... )

There is in fact considerable evidence in the psychology and and sociology literature that the consumption of violent media increases violent behaviour, both from laboratory experiments and real world studies. It is not really a controversial theory. One example is the significant (12.5%) short term increase in homocides in the US after heavyweight prize fights, the greater the publicity the greater the effect. When you're pushed, hitting sixes is as easy as breathing. Apparently. No comment on the first week of the IPL? It will certainly make my conversion of the heathen hordes of Europe a whole lot easier. And push back completion of my PhD by about three months.
