Chapter 11
Where is she?
“Yama-chan, did she come here?” Chinen asked Yamada at the café counter after he can’t spot his sweetheart there, in the café. It was the break time so all participants were having their lunch. But, she’s not there. Where is she?
“No,” Yamada answered shortly. He was busy doing his work, serving the participants. Luckily, there’re not many left. So, he can pay attention a bit to his friend.
“She hasn’t come yet. This is her food,” Yamada’s answered disappointed Chinen more. He took a deep breath.
“Where could she be?” Chinen murmured alone. Yamada smiled when hearing that.
Chinen’s mind was totally blank. He can’t think anymore. He remembered seeing her just before she went into the hall for her presentation. He even showed a thumb up for her and she smiled back to him. Such a sweet moment! He went into a hall too and listened to her presentation for a while. Luckily, he got a front seat. However, he barely understood it as her topic was very high for him. He gave her a salute for being able to communicate in five languages; Malay, English, Arabic, Japanese and French. An hour later, he left the hall and waited for her in the hallway to the café. But, she didn’t show up so he decided to go directly to the café and find her. Unfortunately, he totally lost sight on her and can’t track her anymore. Chinen sighed and took a deep breath again. He leaned his body at the counter and crutched his chin with his arm. He looked at Yamada blankly.
“You look very funny,” Yamada chuckled. “This is my first time seeing you with this kind of nearly give up face.” Chinen sighed a bit. He’s really blurred.
“She’s at the Science Park, under that Sakura tree,” Yuto, who’s just coming told him. Chinen looked at him, confusedly.
“Believe me. I saw her just now,” Yuto convinced his friend. “You better go now before she leaves.”
“Okay, I’ll go now!” Chinen said hurriedly. Suddenly, his face became cheerful with a happy smile on it.
“See, how can we believe that he’s not in love?” Yamada asked Yuto when Chinen was not around anymore.
“Yeah, a minute didn’t see her, he already gone mad,” Yuto agreed. And then, both of them burst into laugh.
*******************
What do I want to talk with her?
Should I do confess to her as what Yamada told me?
Maybe, I can invite her for a lunch together since she hasn’t had it yet. Then, we can have a closer talk together. A romantic one!
Chinen planned alone as he walked toward the park.
*******************
Chinen had reached the Science Park. He noticed his Salsabila was sitting there, on a bench, reading a book while chatting with her friend. Her friend? Oh no! How about my plan? How can I forget that they always together? Chinen slapped his head.
“Hey,” Chinen started a conversation. “Have you eaten?” Chinen asked her softly. He carved a sweet smile.
“Not yet,” she answered shortly without looking at him.
“Erm, what if we have a lunch together?” Chinen asked her slowly. He was hesitating. He could feel his heart beat faster and cold sweat was flowing everywhere. “I haven’t eat too.”
“Thanks for your invitation. But, I’m not hungry,” she refused politely.
“Are you sure? The presentation was exhausting, doesn’t it?” Chinen didn’t believe it. She talked a lot and yet didn’t hungry. She must be lying.
“Or you want drinks? I’ll get some for you,” Chinen offered her. He started a move but Salsabila stopped him.
“It’s okay. We don’t need it,” she said. “Actually, we’re fasting. So, we can’t eat and drink. I hope you understand it,” she explained.
“Fasting? In this hot summer?” Chinen asked. He was really shocked with the answer. For him, it’s really an incredible thing to be done. Without food and drink the entire day, maybe I’m dying already.
Salsabila just nodded her head. She knew that summer in Japan is hot, even hotter than the tropical Malaysia.
“I’m used to it,” she convinced him. “I’ve been fasting since first grade.”
“Why do you need to do all this? Torturing yourself with thirst, suffering from hunger?” Chinen really can’t understand it, without realizing that he had raised his voice. He didn’t mean to scold her. The truth was that he didn’t want his beloved to be sick. It’s just that he cared for her.
Salsabila just carved a smile. She could understand Chinen’s response and she knew that she was doing something nearly impossible to him.
“Well, cool down,” she ordered him. “Why don’t you sit down first? Maybe we can talk more.”
What? She asks me for a talk? It is true? Yay! My dream has come true! Chinen almost can’t believe it. He took a seat opposite the two girls.
“You want to know why I do this, aren’t you?” Now, Salsabila was the one who started.
“Sure!”
“As usual, answer me first,” she commanded him.
“Hai!” he agreed happily.
“Do you know what unfortunate people feel?” Salsabila asked him. “Like homeless, poor person suffer?”
“Of course they faced a lot of hardship. Say, hunger, thirst, pain and etc,” he answered confidently. Just a simple question. “It’s too much that I can’t list all.”
“Have you feel all that?” she asked.
“No,” he answered shortly. He looked at the ground as he knew that the speech will start soon.
“We’re born with a silver spoon and raised in the luxurious. So, we can get whatever we want without have to endure such pain as the unlucky one. If we’re not given a ‘lesson’, for sure we’ll forget ourselves and roots.” This is just an intro. Chinen said to himself.
“Fasting teach us to be grateful with what we have and to not be a greedy person. It also makes us realize how precious the thing we have is.”
“But, doesn’t it affect your body system? I mean your health,” Chinen was still confused.
“Our digestive system has worked non-stop for 24 hours daily. Once, it needs a break too to ‘refresh’ it. Like our brain, it can’t study all the time. So, out of 12 months a year, one is for fasting to help in maintaining our digestive organs health.”
“But, have it been proved?” Chinen wanted to test her.
“Of course. It is accepted in the field of medic. One who’ll undergo surgery is required to fast for a day before to ensure his stomach is ‘clean’,” she explained to him. “Actually, fasting have been practice in all taught since long ago. It’s not a new thing brought by Islam. Just the way it is done differs from a taught with another.”
Chinen nodded his head slowly. I’m too small to be compared to her. She knows a lot of thing that I didn’t.
Suddenly, Dini’s phone rang. She went away to answer it. Chinen took this opportunity to have a dearer talk with his girl.
“Erm, tomorrow you’re free, right?” he asked. Salsabila nodded her head. “Any plan?”
She thought for a while and Chinen waited for her patiently. “Well, tomorrow I planned to …. “ She couldn’t finish her sentence when Dini interrupted suddenly.
“Teacher has waited for us. Let’s go!” Dini took her bag and left the park.
“Hurry up! Or she will get angry,” Dini urged her.
“Okay! Okay!” I’ll go now,” Salsabila protested a bit.
“Sorry, I’ve to go,” she said to Chinen in a hurry. Then, she quickly followed her friend, leaving her Chinen alone.
“Huh! A plan is just a plan,” Chinen muttered alone as he looked at those girls.
