I’ve blazed through pretty much any and every Arthur/Merlin fic I could get my hands on mostly via recommendation lists mentioned below. At some point, the well of classic and well known M/A fic lists started to run dry and I was a sad, desperate person….until I discovered the livejournal communities! The point is, I’ve lurked in this fandom since I discovered it and have now found a way to contribute as a result of my Olympic fic reading.

My list contains reads from both of these, but they have additional stories, so you should definitely still check them out (especially Team Destiny. The Rating System
I arranged the works into the following categories: Good, Great, Better, READ IT, BITCHES! and YAY PORN! I decided to do the ratings just as a way to kind of differentiate because I ended up with SO MANY fics I wanted to include. That said, if it’s on here, it’s good. I don’t mean to offend anyone with the system and many will definitely have different opinions about what should go where.
Since this was made over several weeks, my concept of what's good versus what's great has undoubtedly changed. So although though there are categories, it’s all a bit arbitrary and subject to varying ideas as well as preference. This is especially true since I didn’t really have a rubric or set of standards when picking categories. It’s all very relative and, like a said, very subjective to my feelings at the time.
BE WARNED, the ratings of these vary from G to NC-17. Fics may contain all manner of themes and content as well as triggers. Click at your own caution and read the warnings.
Good:
/love: AU. 12000 words. World of Warcraft. Arthur and Merlin meet in-game.
Auscultate: Arthur's only seen the funny looking skinny kid from upstairs a few times, but he hears him crying late at night through the vent that runs through both of their bedrooms. And sometimes, he can hear the kid's stepfather sneak into the kid's room and hurt him. Arthur's dad tells him to mind his own business, but Arthur can't lie awake at night and listen to it any more. So one night, when he hears the skinny kid sobbing, he puts his face up to the vent and says "Hey, do you need some help?"
Burning Buildings: Arthur’s a fireman, Merlin runs into a burning building to save children, and Gaius has onion breath.
Fell Down a Tree: While hunting Merlin tries to be useful by climbing on a tree to get some fruits. But he falls and Arthur has to look after him for all the way home to Camelot, trying to make him comfortable.

Merlin Emrys' Biggest Fan: Written for the kinkme merlin prompt, ‘Arthur/Merlin. Merlin is a world-famous celebrity whom Arthur has been pining after for years. He finally has a chance to meet him, and on a whim slips him a note with his hotel and room number. Merlin unexpectedly takes him up on his offer. reincarnation!fic.
One&Only: AU. Warning: underage, way underage. Written for a kink_merlin prompt.
Sleeping Arthur: Crackish and exactly what the title suggests.
Something Beautiful: Arthur is already king and takes on a young merlin as his servant.
Small-Town Mechanics: AU. Arthur's car break down in the middle of nowhere. Merlin is one of the local mechanics. The build up is quite good (though the ending is somewhat cheesy).
Leashed: Merlin is leashed and Arthur is his master. This, despite what it sounds like, is not a bondage fic. It's AU where some sorcerers were kept under control because of their magic.
Hostage!: Arthur and Merlin meet under a hostage situation and keep each other from losing it as the police try to get everyone out safely.

Merlin, however, is fascinated by the way Arthur moves, lives, and breathes, and so follows him around town, essentially stalking him with a camera because he wants to make a short film/documentary about Arthur's life."

Users are Losers: AU future!fic - Merlin's a whiz-kid chemistry student at uni who mixes/grows/magics drugs to pay the bills. Arthur's a new client who's hesitant about the product, so Merlin agrees to sample with him. Massive bonus points for touchy-feely hallucinating!Arthur and composed!Merlin.

An Exercise in Holding One's Breath: AU. He had known that he and Merlin were destined to be together since he was five years old. The only trouble he had was trying to get Merlin to work that out. (I think this one might be recced somewhere else, but I'm not sure so I'm putting it here).

Over the years they drifted apart and barely acknowledge each other but Merlin is still hopelessly in love with the boy who ushered him into puberty.

Merlin, though technically settled in, is still overwhelmed by the Pendragon mansion and spends most of his time trying to make himself as small a burden as possible.He doesn’t want to mess up a good thing and is grateful that Uther is mostly too busy to notice him and change his mind. Arthur, who’s living at home during university, does notice Merlin, though. And it’s different from when Uther took Morgana in, because they were children and she was practically his sister anyway - no, Merlin is different; guarded and awkward and lonely, mostly. But he’s still a bit snarky and beautiful in a morbid sort of way - and Arthur doesn’t think he’s ever been so attracted to anyone before. "
