I'm just joking with you. Apparently there's plenty of leeway in English haiku. I have huge problems with how it's been appropriated and whether it's appropriate as an English verse form at all. Hence my contribution to my poetry class last week:

I don't do haiku
It's like putting a nightingale in a rubbish
compactor. Fuck it.
